I'm talking about smooth level ground, I know a 4:1 TC can do it easily, but I was wondering if a jeep with the 2.73:1 TC can.

Yes.

Mine will in 2H and 1st. 4.0 with NV3550 geared 4.56 running 35x12.5x15

I don't think mine will, identical setup. Maybe if I really tease the clutch out it'll go without stalling. I think i'll try it tonight. I know in 4lo it's hard to stop. My clutch slave went out so I had to grind it into 4lo and limp home, which was thankfully only about 2 blocks. But when I got home I had to turn it off to make it stop crawling. Which is a little weird since I've never experienced that on the trail.

That's obvious, but most, if not all, will not crawl at idle in 2H 1st gear. We're talking about a manual transmission. The 4.0 isn't that strong.

Mine did it all the time with a manual. 8 years as a daily, so this is something I know a little bit about.

Is yours stalling or something? Mine will idle in 2nd gear even in 2WD all day long. It would even do that when I was poorly geared with 31’s and 3.55s. If yours can’t do that then you need another 4.0.

I've been able to crawl up my driveway(s), some quite steeper than average, in 2H with several different tire/axle combinations. The nsg370/4.88 combo obviously did it the best but ax15 does it just fine as well.

I wonder if my 4.0 won't idle in 6th in high, it's only ~16 mph at 650 rpm. I've always heard the 4.0 makes 75%+ of peak torque at idle. Obviously you can't get there with a clutch dump into 6th but I think it'd idle through the gears.

Well I guess it will, and I've always known this. Just pulling it into the garage last night I never once used the gas, just feathered the clutch. Duh.

No idea what came stock in a 97, 5 speed 4 cyl, but mine will crawl like a turtle in first gear at idle (before or after the re-gear). I use it all the time in local traffic.

Sure - I idle mine into its parking area all the time, up over a soft curb, through the grass. The only issue is the ridiculously high idle modern vehicles have.
