Wiring Harness Gauge Help

I'm new to the TJ world and also the forum. I tried running down an answer in the wiring schematics but I can t seem to find this harness (i'm probably missing it). I'm troubleshooting random gauge cluster dropping power. I just picked the jeep up this week and I'm running down the list of things to fix. it's a 2004 TJ with the 5.3 swap and 4L60 trans. It has manual pedals with the clutch pinned back running the auto trans. I have an autometer tach running and this wire was pushed into the harness with a push pin and taped into the harness. I'm trying to figure out why the wire is in it given the tach is working. Red wire with new heat shrink is coming from the instrument cluster (orange wire) I found that in 8W-40 but i'm not sure why it's hanging out bare so I cleaned it up. Any idea on what's going with the wire pushed into the harness coming the tach?

I certainly have no idea, and I don't see whatever it is you're describing, but the OEM tach is wired through the gauge cluster and I'm 95% certain the tach signal is sent by way of the PCM. So an aftermarket tach is going to require custom wiring, which is I think what that black plug is. From what I recall of wiring in an attometer tach years ago, it was pretty simple (and I'm confident the wiring could be found on their site). You'll need a switched 12V for power, a ground, a tap into the lighting circuit to illuminate it, and then the "hard part," the tach signal. From memory, you somehow attach to the #1 plug wire or ignition coil.

So trace each wire to where it is tapped into and that will tell you the purpose. Or find the attometer pinout and determine the function that way. My best guess as to why it's working w/o 1 wire attached would be the illumination or maybe some memory function.

Maybe a better way to ask. Does anyone recognize that plug and what it may be there for in a stock setup? It's in the main harness wrap running up the steering column. I can figure the gauge out I think. If that plug from the harness is not there in a normal TJ setup i'll assume it's all custom (or part of the swap for some reason) and start tracing wire back. Just wanted to see if that plug belongs to something as of right now it's just hanging out. Thanks.

Thanks. In the other photos on the forum I saw most of them pinned back to the harness still taped if not in use. I did find the plug in the connector pinout and that's exactly it. I'll assume the harness had a wire in it for the power source to the autometer gauge for some reason. Thanks for the help.
