241 vs Atlas ll

It is a lot of money for something that may not be 100% serviceable. Atlas or 300 will have plenty of parts available for a long time.

unfortunately it means i probably just won't ever upgrade. I can swallow $1500 for a 4:1 low range. But so far my wheeling doesn't justify $3k+.

I still can't believe that. Everyone on that for sale post thought the dude was nuts for listing it that high. Lo and behold, someone bought it.

Mike and I were going to assemble it since we did the rebuild video on mine. But it never got past the liability disclaimers.

I see them for 13-1700ish, a few a yr. Been starting to see JK rubii cases more often now too.

how different is the JK 241? Are parts interchangeable enough that you could build a complete one with a minimal amount of TJ specific parts?
The JK version would work, but it doesn't have a speed sensor. The PCM would be unhappy about that. You could machine an external tone ring and sensor, but that's a lot of work.
That said, I found a low-mile TJ 241 thru LKQ. I was checking daily for 6 months, they don't come up much. We have an account thru my work and got a good price.

I offered him what I thought was good money for it and he said he had to get at least $1500. Hell no, no way for a basket case.

A local one in CO sold in parts and pieces for around $1600...
I was going to mention that you see them pop up on car-part.com here in pieces for a lot of money. A shop locally just rebuilt one that was cracked from a front driveshaft cracking the case.

I have a buddy looking into this too. I know they don't have the speedo. He is thinking about trying this or something similar because the jk cases are typically mich cheaper around here. Still researching that option though. It claims to work by sending a vss signal so maybe it would jive with the pcm?

Anyone know someone who has done this?

I haven't tried it but on the surface I have doubts the PCM would like that. Even if it accepted the signal and the speedometer worked, the PCM seems to do some stuff with the idle based on being in motion, and I don't think the GPS would have the resolution.

that makes me wonder if you could swap in a TJ output shaft and housing, or if there are other incompatibilities with the main case or internals that would prevent that.

His is a 99 and a manual. He drove around with the speedo disconnected as a test. It just didn't like wide open throttle. It would drive around fine otherwise which maybe it would work on older tjs?

You can, or at least I've seen it done by folks and we know how that goes. But, the parts to do the conversion to run a speedo are about 1/2 the cost of a used case.

This guy said he bought one that was rebuilt using a jk case. Granted there are no pictures and it is the internet. I think you just need the tj main shaft, tail housing and tone ring. Or maybe just the dakota digital GPS deal.

Plus it seems expensive to gather those parts.

My 99 TJ 5 speed was down for a few weeks while I messed with a dead battery followed by a crank-no start issue. My speedo healer must have needed to wake up or something because the first time I drove it, the speedo was sitting at zero. 3 stop signs on the way to the nearest gas station and it died when I came to a stop at every single one. Pushed the button on the speedo healer, speedometer came back and it never stalled again.

No idea whether my 06 would do the same thing.

I'd like the low ratio but I'm not hardcore enough to need front digs or more than 2 speeds, I like a stock looking interior and everything to function as Jim Repp intended, and the effort as I understand it is comparatively small for a 241 swap.

It was a pretty simple swap for a later models tj/lj in my experience. I wanted a little lower tcase ratio and a 241 popped up locally last year for $1400. I didn't want to spend that much but that is about what it would have cost to flip a 300 which I was also pricing out. My stock skid bolted up the same and I purchased an lj Rubicon driveshaft cheap on ebay. Cable shifter from savvy and a 4wd light switch and I was in business. It took longer to line up my bent up stock skid 😂 than to do the tcase part. I just got my speedo healer installed finally this week.

I haven't seen a reasonable tj 241 listed for a while locally though.

One place a manual seems to do better, at least in my experience is in snow wheeling. It seems to be harder to control wheel spin when in deep snow that requires very slow tire speed. Or maybe just the guys I wheel with that have autos don’t know what they are doing…. Lol.

Another over looked option is the Bronco dana20. It is driver drop and there was 4-1 gears for them, however I’m not sure on the availability as the gentleman who was making them I believe has retired. It looks like a baby atlas.
