My peeves with the TJ

You know guys I’m driving up the parkway in Huntsville Alabama and looking at the age of vehicles and you don’t see many vehicles still on the road that are 20 years old being driven daily except the TJ And the occasional older work truck

I had the 304 CJ five- It was like the stupidest engine /wheelbase combination history has ever known

I beg to differ….

Half doors are a lot more versatile for me. I like being able to rest my arm on the edge. I wouldn’t want to wheel with full doors if I had them and would necessitate owning more Jeep doors which is something I care little about as it is. I’m a no top, no door preferring Jeep guy. I would most likely want hard doors if I had a hard top, which I also have little desire for.

Honestly they probably shouldn’t have even made the TJ with the 4 cylinder. It makes it a sorry excuse for a vehicle IMO.

Absolutely they are life changing. I can't think of a more perfect product or appliance that sucks at what it is supposed to do as much as half doors do. So yes, they take something simple and basic that the entire rest of the automotive world has figured out, then they fuck it all up so it changes your life to just miserable if happen to be one of those who places a modicum of value on things working properly and continuing to work properly.
Mine are crappy, but I'm 100% skewed. I'd rather have zero doors, zero top. I actually laughed the first time I drove the 2005 TJ, the half door and soft top was no better than the full size soft doors on my 1978 CJ7, to your point, ridiculous that 27 years later and ....marginally better....maybe? Comically shitty.

Drove that 78 CJ5 for 5 years in college and in Houston, with zero top or doors at all for 2.5 years, in the rain and 100 degree heat, sitting in traffic in a downpour in Houston having people point at me, so I'm skewed and a stupid perspective because I enjoyed it.

1/2 doors only make my wife happy, the no door makes her nervous, and I'm always one to do whatever it takes to make a girl "happy".

Amen! Plus, the jump to coil springs makes the ride just a little better! ;)

In 1979 we drove our '78 CJ-7 from Long Island to KCMO. I still remember every expansion joint on I-70! Also, the doors were metal on the inside and were so cold your hand would stick to them if you accidentally touched them. There was nothing more fun in the summer with the top and doors off, though!

The manual transmission doesn’t do anything for the TJ but make it a little more fun to drive- Then if things get tight and close it makes it less fun-I’ve got one of each transmission-

Agree with this. Mine had the 6 speed when I got it. I had it swapped to the 42rle auto. Significantly better on the trail. Though I miss the manual when driving up a mountain. Manual was fun on the street, but more of a liability off road.

Hunted a while for half doors. Finally found a set about 5 years ago. Sold the full doors shortly after to fund other mods. Mine is a trail rig and full doors just have no place.

If you're even mentioning steps, then it must be a DD or street rig. This may explain your transmission preference and some of the other items.

Regarding the fog lights: I have been at the top of a mountain ready to drive down. The fog can roll in with little notice. It can get to the point where you have to drive 5mph and still end up on the wrong side of the road. The fog lights definitely help WHEN THERE'S FOG. Even in the rain or snow, they are still a good idea for those odd times when you want to be seen.

Bottom line, Jeeps are like giant Legos. Most of the parts are interchangeable. So luckily you can piece together what you want.
