How to properly tow your Jeep Wrangler TJ

No, unfortunately. Thanks for the info. Stay warm. It's 39 here in Florida.

Look at your jeep owners manual. It has a section telling you exactly what you need to do. You can find a copy of your manual online if you don’t have on. Be sure your jeep doesn’t have a locking steering wheel if so you will need the key in the on position to disabled the lock. I removed the mechanism in the ignition assembly even though my year didn’t require the key to be on. I just wanted to never have to think about that issue. Im very anal.

I had a non-programmable key cut so I can unlock the steering wheel without it allowing the Jeep to start.

The stock key works fine depending on your year. One of the reasons Jeeps are so popular as toads is because you normally don’t have to have the key on, running down the battery. Look at your owners manual.

You don't have to have the key in the "on" energized position. One click forward from off unlocks the ignition without energizing it. I cut a spare key and just lock the jeep up when towing.

I didn’t want to be parked somewhere and have someone look in and see a key. I tow with a soft top so it would be easy to get in. I removed the little tab in the ignition actuator so I don’t have to have a key in the ignition at all.

That's probably the best option.

I leave my manual in 4th gear when flat towing, but I think any gear would work fine. Bolting the tow bar mounts to a factory bumper would make me a little nervous. Do you think the backing plates the OP used are sufficient? I have the tow bar mounts that bolt to the frame.

where did you get the tow bar mounts that bolt to the frame ? I think that is the route I would like to go

A few words of wisdom here- I tow an 06 lj behind a class c and have for the last 8 years. I use the road master stuff and have three cars setup with it. I have rheir in line wiring going to the factory lights that I replaced with litedots.

The key part is the spare key like you have, tranny in Park for auto and transfer case in neutral, I removed the steering wheel lock spring and drove that way for a few years until the steering wheel locked up once and ate a tire. Pm me if you have any questions.

Forgot to say the road master ready brake does work when it’s setup correctly- saved me on a few sudden stop and windy down hill runs
