Trouble "Rebuilding" My Mirrors

New-to-me full doors. In picture, I have attached mirror bracket to door. Now trying to attach mirror to bracket.

Bracket is mostly hollow (see pic), but mirror post/stud is only partly threaded. So, mirror won't tighten down onto bracket even when nut is fully torqued.

How to make it snug? I could use about 10 washers in there, but it seems I'm missing a spacer of some sort? FSM doesn't say anything about how these two pieces attach.

Not likely. The spring holds the mirror in place, but allows it to pivot in the event of hitting something. Message Pman or another Jeep recycling outfit. They should have the needed parts.

Make sure the bracket isn't on the wrong side (upside down). The retaining nut should be recessed

Thanks. Yep, the three teeth on the mirror line up well with the three slots on top of the bracket, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

I can see how the teeth are angled a bit to allow the pivoting (if under spring pressure) that @Gollywomper desribed.
