Hello fellow inmates,

This is my first post on this site, but I have owned Jeeps for 30 years and built up several (CJ7, JK's, JT, WJ, XJ, KJ). At any rate, I picked up what I believe to be a diamond in the rough last week for cheap. Maybe the seller knew what he had, maybe not, or maybe he didn't care, and it is looking like I struck gold. She fires right up and almost everything works. I am in the process of learning what has been done and what needs to be done to get this beast street legal and back on the road for now. It will be a daily short distance commuter but mostly a trail dog. At the very least it has a Rock Krawler full long arm kit, hand throttle, HD steering, upgraded brackets everywhere, winch, compressor, armor, snorkel and more.

I will go through and perform a full maintenance on the systems (Ignition, cooling, electrical, etc), but the first order of business is the rear axle assembly. It needs seals on both sides and probably a new shock mount welded on (wait, shocks are suppose to flop around right). There is a truss welded on for the upper control arms and what looks like upgraded brackets and cover. I was planning on tearing it down, but it sure would be nice to know what assembly it is before I show up at the parts store with what may be left of the seals and say "I need two like this" and hope, haha.

Its just an 8.8 out of a ford leaking 90 wt on the brakes.they are narrower than stock, put the driveshaft off to one side and hang down further than jeep axles.

Long arm suspension doesn't have good geometry.

Looks like a clean jeep though. You should have fun with it. Post some pics of the steering and pitman arm

That was my first thought but it has a different shaped cover than the Dana 44 on my other Jeep. See how it has three bolts and is flat across the bottom? My first impression was a Ford 8.8

Probably an 8.8 from an explorer. Measure wms to wms and check the axleshaft spline count. You have a little research to do on what year range it came out of for parts

At least a Dana 44, it's certainly not Dana 35. Maybe bigger lol, I could barely see the bolt pattern on that diff cover in the photo.

Flange at the pinion. ABS bullshit on top of the casting. More hangy downy bits than should be legal. I don't know 8.8's well enough to pick them out at a glance but I know it isn't a 44. Disc brake backing plates look to have dust shields with out turned flanges which is very much not Dana 44.

Stuck with the suck of an 8.8?

If he can find a Super kit for it, fix the leaks, and doesn't spend much time in the rocks, it is a perfectly fine axle since it is already there. The only time they don't make any sense whatsoever is when they aren't already installed, leak, and you play in the rocks. (provided you fix all their little issues)
