Daily Driver, Go Where I Want To Build

For those wondering why I was interested in switching to an automatic transmission, this video is an example of the level of control and precision that is possible thanks to the torque converter. Notice the lack of wheel spin and the finesse all throughout the climb. All accomplished through careful throttle control.

C'mon....You can SAY you swapped for that...but we all know you're just a sissy and didn't like driving the manual in Denver traffic anymore...Sissy.

This is true. After 15 years of driving a manual almost exclusively, I'm just tired and worn out after every trip to the grocery store.

This means I can finally sell the Liberty!

Andy blocked me, but I'm aware. I think it is a waste of effort since my finger is right there at the switch when I'm pulling out of park. 😉

And you know at a glance if OD is off or not. I leave the OD off for all within town trips with 40-45 speed limit, the jeep is much nicer to drive without that at those speeds since you stay in 3rd gear.

The auxiliary cooler is fully plumbed. And the first drive happened tonight! It was a quick 15 minute run around in the cold without doors or windows. Everything seems to working as it ought to. The transmission temp stayed right at about 110°F.

4.88 is barely ok with 35s. 55ish mph was running about 1800rpm. It's hard to believe this was the common recommendation for so many years. Thankfully the new OD off button works! This definitely needs a regear to 5.38 sometime soon.

Overall, it's a very different Jeep with the automatic. It sounds different. It even starts up differently. The urge to shift after 8 years is very strong.

Would you call it "Fascinating" ?

That's what I said when I drove yours up through the first rock garden at Chinaman Gulch a couple years ago. I knew I wanted an automatic after that!

While I haven't done any of the fun stuff yet, it is a fascinating experience given how much changes with how you interact with the vehicle. Especially with all the little habits and reactions that develope over 8 years and 120k miles.

@Chris spammer alert. Rockomaster is the u/n

Just buy every transmission TJ if you really want to know what you’re missing and where you’re missing it.

Somewhere in these first three months, after already having been thoroughly convinced that K&N is garbage and that most CAIs don't pull in cold air, I put in a real cold air intake that uses a paper filter. I built myself a Windstar cowl intake. This lowers intake temps from a pretty constant 190*F to between 5-60* above ambient air temperature, depending on ground speed and wind direction.

Later on I wrapped the canister and tube in header tape. This reduced intake temps by 5*F.

Three years later, I will confidently tell you that there are little to no performance gains here. I have seen intake temps as low as 0*F and I still can't make the long steep highway climb up to the Eisenhower Tunnels any faster than stock. Eventually, I will make good use out of the extra room that removing the factory air box provides.

While we are on the topic, I also put in Bosch 4 port injectors. The only change I noticed was the smoother idle that many others have reported. Mrblaine once suggested that the smoother idle is really the result of having replaced worn o-rings which fixed a vacuum leak on one or more cylinders.

I just started reading some on your build, is there a link to direct where to get the parts for this cowl intake?

Anything I used came mostly from scrounging JeepForum 8 years ago. Though, there isn't much to it.

One thing I think I can say with that amount of hindsight is that I'm not sure there is any good reason for the cowl intake beyond the need to make room for something that has to go where the stock air box goes.
