What did you do to your TJ today?

I drained the Thermocure mix. It had been sitting in there for a week and it was pretty nasty. I also took out the t-stat to get unrestricted flow. The t-stat collected a bunch of crud too. Then, I backflushed the entire cooling system for about 20 minutes with a garden hose. I then ran it for another 30 minutes with the garden hose attached to flush the entire system thoroughly with clean water. I drained the water from the radiator and then removed the engine block drain plug. I was worried that was going to be an issue because I thought I had possibly crossthreaded it last time. Nope, it came out fine and got the block drained. At this point, there should be almost no water in the entire cooling system. Put the drain plug back in and filled it up with distilled water.

I'm now on my 3rd cycle of running distilled water through the cooling system. Even after the 1st flush, the water was fairly brown. I only wanted to do 3 flushes with distilled before filling with coolant, but I am probably going to keep flushing it with distilled until it is clear, or nearly clear. Then, the t-stat goes back in and it gets filled with coolant.

I'm so ready to be done with this stupid cooling system.

That gunk is epic. Wow.

Yeah, it is pretty bad. I am considering doing a 2nd Thermocure flush, but I'm just so done with messing around with this cooling system at this point. It is taking about 45-60 minutes per distilled water flush (fill, run for 10 min, drain) so I'll keep doing that until about 7 or 8 tonight if I need to, and then put the t-stat back in and be done with it.

Is that somewhat solid or gooey? It looks gooey.

When you drained the block and flushed it with the hose, did anything noteworthy come out? Or just dirty water?

Man, you have a mess of a cooling system.

It is gooey. It washed away pretty easily.

Yeah, this cooling system was a mess. This Jeep sat in a garage for 3 years and was neglected. I got i and have replace the water pump, t-stat, t-stat housing (which needs to be replace again), radiator, and all the hoses. I bypassed the heater core because I know for a fact that it doesn't work and is clogged with rust and junk. I will replace that over the winter.

I followed the video below. You can see when he turned on the garden hose, a lot of black water came up and out of the no spill funnel. It ran until it was clear. He then turned on the engine to circulate the cooling system and the water turned black again. My results were exactly the same as his. I did so lots of specks in the water though. I think he only did 1 or 2 distilled flushes. I am on my third because I know my cooling system is a mess.

I've been sort of following your cooling troubles, I may have missed a post or two though. I know it's aggravating but you're sticking with it to take care of it. It will be rewarding in the end. (y)

I went for a drive on I-81 to see how my Jeep handles after the new control arms were installed. This is proof that a 2.5L 4 cylinder can in fact do 70 on the interstate lol my wife was surprised at how smooth the ride is now at highway speeds. It’s always nice when an expensive upgrade justifies itself 🤷🏼‍♂️ I still need to get the front uppers to match the other three sets but it’s driving better than it ever has in the three years I’ve owned it. I also believe it’s time to start looking into a fuel pressure regulator or possibly a pump. I need to dig out my fuel pressure gauge and do some testing.

I'm starting to think that there is a deposit of rust at the bottom of the engine block that is making all distilled water flushes rust colored.

Aligned the steering, mounted the rear view mirror, added a Ram mount, drilled some holes for the mirror wiring (early windshield on late TJ) took it for some test drives. Got the right injector and map data in the PCM but can't get it to fuel properly in boost. Sent a nice chunk of cash to @Flyin' Ryan Performance . Hopefully he can get me a good base tune before my trip Wednesday. Otherwise I suppose I can just bypass the blower.

All of this work and I forgot to buy visors. So I snagged a pair off eBay.

Jeep drives so nice. At this point it's pretty much new.

This I think mostly sums up what I'm considering TJ phase 4 for now until I outboard in the winter. Still have just a couple little things like the tune, valve cover gasket, a new radiator and water pump, etc.

Savvy Mid Arm.
New 35s.
New shocks.
New ball joints.
New wheel bearings.
New Tom Woods front driveshaft.
New shocks and steering stabilizer.
New IRO front lower control arm mounts.
Weld washer rear lower control arm mounts.
Relocated rear spring perches.
BMB front sway brackets.
BMB pads.
BMB caliper flip.
Centric rotors.
New parking brake shoes, hardware, cables, adjuster.
New calipers.
New extended front brake lines.
New custom rear hard brake lines.
RCV front shafts.
Revolution rear shafts.
Front tie rod flip.
New Dana diff covers. (RockHard lower guards on the way)
New PRP seats.
Frame cleaned up and painted.
New body mounts.
New Savvy body lift.
New Aluminum UCF UHC trans skid. (Engine skid struts still need fab'd to work with upper control arm.)
New CavFab sliders.
Poison Spyder corners heavily trimmed and modified.
Tub interior stripped and painted.
Early TJ windshield frame.
New cowl gasket.
All hinges/bumpers/shackles/windshield frame/steering skid/coils media blasted and painted.
New windshield glass.
New injectors.
New map sensor.
New serp belt.
New power steering lines.
All new fluids.
New oil pan gasket.
New RMS.
New MagnaFlow muffler, which sounds way better than expected.

Probably missed some stuff.

35s look tiny, kind of miss my 37s

And I desperately need to fix this lack of bass situation. What is this tiny music for, ants?

I had new SEM interior paints mixed to convert the dash to tan but I'm unsure how much or what parts. I'm kind of liking the funky combo I've got going on now. So in no hurry there but I might do something.

Damn, JM you’ve been busting some @ss on that thing. Have to wonder is someone used stream water, incorrect a-freeze or tap water? I believe you’ll get it. I would run it, keep my eye on it and possibly flush every 3/6 months?

My plan is to keep flushing until 6:30 tonight. I'll let it cool for a couple of hours and then around 8:15-8:30, take off the t-stat housing, get it to Advanced Auto by the time they close at 9, and swap it out. I bought it from them a few weeks ago and it is slightly warped already. I'll get home, get the mounting area cleaned up, get a new gasket to mount the t-stat and t-stat housing, and fill it up with coolant. I'm going to call it done for now at that point.
