Installing a no slip lunch box locker and having clearance issues with my Dana 30 carrier

Ok well I called Denny's driveshaft this morning to ask about the recommended torque spec. They say it should be 55 ft lbs, so I think that is what I'm going to go with along with red loctite.

Got the locker installed in the carrier today. Ring gear back on, and got the carrier back in the axle without too much fuss. It basically slid in by hand with just a couple hammer taps to drive it in.

Got the bearing caps back on and closed up the diff.

Basically just need to reassemble the axles, hubs and brakes and test out the locker for engagement.

Did you do all the feeler-gauge checking between the cam gears? I think its funny, for the Aussie, you NEED to make sure you have the right tolerance between the cam gears. BUT if you don't, and it still passes the "spin test", it doesn't matter.

Yes, it came with a feeler gauge, tolerances were good. 👍

I hate to say it because I'm not done yet, but it went pretty smoothly, other than having to grind for clearance.

Wow fancy I had to go buy my own feeler gauges!! It's not supposed to be hard so I'll be optimistic for you. It will make a huge difference offroad for you. Definitely one of the best things I ever did to improve offroad performance

It came with this. The gauge should not fit between the cam gears on the wider, but should fit on the narrow gauge.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much of an improvement it makes. Other than the anti rock, this is the first big upgrade I'm installing on this Jeep.

Suspension is next on the list!

Oh that's pretty nice I had to buy a set of gauges and then stack them up to get to the distance required.

And cool. I went in the same order, with this before a lift. Having a lift is nice and all but I think this made way more of a difference. Course it doesn't look as cool

Did you upgrade to chromoly shafts when you put in your locker?

I did not! I upgraded one of the stub shafts to chromoly when it broke but otherwise no. The time I broke an axle shaft in Ouray really wasn't the lockers fault I don't think, it was more of a bad move on my part. I have only run 31 and 33" tires though idk what you have

Be prepared for a lot more steering effort. The open front diff is easy to steer, but when locked both front wheels turn the same amount so it tries to pull straight forward all the time, and you have to use a more effort to turn the steering wheel, even on slight curves in the trail. But it’s well worth it, as you will see.

I've had the opportunity while owning this Jeep the last 2 years to wheel most of the nearby trails this Jeep can handle without more serious upgrades. It will be fun to compare before and after having had the chance to wheel my TJ a fair amount on open diffs.

I'm on 33s, but I also try not to be a heavy foot, so I'm not planning to upgrade the axles just yet. Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite me.

Well, if you get unlucky and it breaks, hopefully you do it in a lucky way like I did, I still drove home on the highway with this

I think its alot worse to break a shaft in the dana 35

I guess I broke the u-joint more than the axle. Same diff really

If all you broke was the shaft, that's pretty lucky, the axle had no where to walk out it looks like? Bet that sounded terrible going down the road though.

It would bind a little bit on the corners driving home but eventually clearanced itself.

I thought you needed to pull the axle nut to remove it... I didn't have a socket big enough....... but it turns out you don't. If I wasn't an idiot and realized that, I would've pulled the knuckle off and pulled the inner shaft out and it would've been a nice normal drive home.

Just an FYI on feeler gauges check for front locker install. I did not have the gauges required so I used NUMBERED drill bits in the sizes recommended, go and no go method. Worked perfect. I would also suggest buying a housing spreader for install. I did not have one and it fought me all the way. Spreaders can be had for under $100 on Amazon.

My carrier went in and out of the housing quite easily by hand. Over 190k on the axle probably has something to do with that.
