Swing Out Tire Carrier Fix

I bought a sort of "off brand" rear bumper with tire carrier. Every bolt is tight, but there was still slop in the swing, it would swing in and out. So instead of buying a new one, I decided to try to fix the issue. If you grab the tire, and pull back, it'd move at least 2 inches forward and back. I was just waiting for it to break off on the road. I bought a hard foam rubber for a boat dock, and fashioned it to fit on the swing, and serve as a bumper. I removed the factory rubber snobbery as well. The rubber bumper I bought was 4x4x24 inches. A few slices with a knife, and some epoxy, and all set. No more sloppy bouncing around.Nice and solid.

Thanks for the idea, as I probably need to do something like that myself. My Smittybilt bumper and swing out only touches the bottom snubber and wiggles entirely too much at the top for my taste.

All swing out tire carriers need exactly that to control the bouncing

I permanently fixed the rattle on my Shittybilt tire carrier like this.

I hope that doesn't chaff the shiz out of your paint.

I have a similar one and the tire is so heavy that is sags and is a beast to release the latch to swing it. Swings great after getting it open. I literally have bend down under the tire, put my back against it, and stand up to take the weight off so I can open the latch. I think I am going to have the swing bent to the point the sag does not cause this.

It's high density foam rubber, doesn't scratch paint at all.

The foam might not. But any grit that gets between it and the paint will scratch.

Well, I'll just have to keep it as clean as possible.

It could easily be argued that the snubber material should be attached to the gate rather than to the swing away.

It could, but the hardware seemed to squash it just a bit. And its a bit more unnoticeable on the swing. What i think I'll do, is put some clear protective tape, like that stuff people put on the front of their cars for bugs and road grit. I think that'd do the trick.
