I went to a Beaux Arts Architectural school where we had to get a minor in Art to graduate. These types of perspective illusions are a key to hand rendering interiors and exteriors of buildings. We had a semester studying this stuff. It's wild what can be done with a flat surface that tricks your brain. Escher was another level of these illusion based visual techniques.
The techniques were not invented by Ames but he based them on Renaissance examples like the Ceiling of the Treasure room (I can't remember the name of the building however) where perspective techniques were used to make the ceiling seem to have depth beyond the flat surface and each person painted is the same size yet appear to be smaller the more toward the center of the perspective.
Cool stuff. There are a lot more example like this one out there.
