I have a 2006 TJ. Does anyone have experience with GPS/radio units that replace the factory radio?
My radio has been acting up so I am thinking of replacing anyway, and would consider something with a built in GPS.
Thanks,
Tom

I’ve been lookin around for a new radio for my 97 also. I want to make it a double din system but am not sure about the conversion kit on amazon. Seems like it has decent reviews. I have been looking at a radio from Best Buy. Pioneer double din with apple Car play. If you have iPhone then the maps on the radio work off your phone so no need to get GPS.

I have an '06 as well, you can put a double DIN with a little trimming behind the dash. I went with a cheap carplay capable Jenson, double DIN unit. For those times I need routing it uses apple maps, works well. I wish it did carplay over BT but I understand few do that.

If you went with a double DIN setup and got an Apple CarPlay head unit (assuming you're an Apple guy), that would be awesome.

Otherwise you could go the route of @badlieutenant and get an Android head unit with GPS in it.

All of this of course requires a double DIN setup.

does anyone have any experience with upgrading the dash on a TJ to the double din. according to best buy the 97 TJ isn't double din. sure looks close though. i attached a screen shot of the one I've found.

I put a double din bezel in my '06 LJ and it was super easy. There was a small brace or bracket I had to cut to allow the head unit to fit, but the instructions that came with the bezel mentioned this. Couple seconds with a cutoff wheel and everything fit well. Can't remember what the brace was connected to, but I do remember at the time realizing very clearly that it didnt look like cutting it would be an issue (and it hasn't been years later).

Thank you very much.

I put one in my 05 and it was super easy with a little trimming. I went through Crutchfield and got a Kenwood touch screen and the kit with everything you need.

Pretty sure you can't, they changed things in '03 I believe that makes it an option with some cutting but not earlier years

I just finished installing a double din carplay unit in my 05.

For $240 you get a lot of features and the interface is pretty snappy. Plus the screen is capacitive touch which endsup looking much nicer than the resistive touch found on many of the other budget carplay receivers.

I am a little ignorant on this. What is double DIN? It sounds like its not an issue on a 2006?

Double DIN refers to the radio size. Double DIN is what's most common nowadays. Picture a 7" touchscreen radio. That's a double din size. Single DIN is the 'old school' smaller radios, like you had in every car in the 80's.

Does anyone have any pics of the double din units installed? What map system are you using? Can you import topographic maps? How about xm reception in the back country? Thanks, Tim

Unless you are traveling underground, XM satellite radio works fine in the back country. Sometimes better than in the big city. :)
