Rancho RS5000X Questions

I’ll take measurements tomorrow but I’ll have to wait to cycle the suspension. My Jeep is pretty light, I don’t have a winch or an extremely heavy front bumper and I don’t carry too much in the rear of my Jeep so the shocks may be a little too stiff

They're not too stiff. Until you look at/show us a photo of the exposed strut length, an easy quick thing to do, you're only guessing. Your symptoms point to the shocks simply being too tall which will be indicated by less than half of the strut being exposed.

Be careful with what you are being told on this thread before you spend your hard earned money.

There is no substitute for cycling your suspension. In the rear where the shocks are at a steep angle compared to the axle the shocks travel different distances when the suspension moves.

My LJ at 3800lbs ran a bit rough when it was empty with new RS5000X shocks in the rear. With more weight it was better. With allot more weight it's now pretty soft.
 
You remove the springs and then while the jeep is on stands you move the axle up and down to see if everything clears. For example, if your tires are hitting your fenders when you go over a bump you'll see that right away. You'll also be able to see if your bump stops are set correctly. It is very important when you put larger tires and different shocks on a Jeep to make sure everything fits. Learning how to do it will save you allot of trouble in the long run. It will also help you understand how all the parts work under the Jeep.

Honestly if you are running 33" tires on a 2" lift that may be more your issue than anything else.

I highly doubt they are too stiff. I do know that more than 2" of lift is needed for 33s and 2" bump stop extension is not enough for the front tires. At least add a small body lift.

The reason I keep suggesting the Rancho shock is too tall is because their sizing information consistently suggests shock lengths that are too tall. They have a history of that, it happened to me too. As in much more more shock body than exposed strut and simply too tall for the space they're mounted in.

Too tall of a shock for the suspension height bottoms out when driving over a dip/bump on the road and gives a nightmare rough/stiff ride when they bottom out. It'll knock your fillings loose.

I can almost guarantee that is what happened here too.

I have been struggling with this for awhile as Rancho's web site is not the best for proper shock selection. I currently have RE shocks with the following ID's and travel:

Front RXJ703B - 23.5" extended - 14.9" collapsed
Rear RXJ704B - 23.8" extended - 14.8" collapsed

Any suggestions?
 
Measure your collapsed length and your extended length, then buy shocks based on those numbers. I am in agreement with everyone else, sounds like the shocks are to long and bottoming out. I've driven a jeep with the ranchos up front and stiff is not how I would describe them.
 
I've been wondering about the possibilty of this very situation. Out of curiosity (because those shocks are on my list of "to dos") if I have a 2" Rubicon Express BB installed would it be best to get the Ranchos recommended for stock height?

“Best” would be actually cycle the suspension and measure the correct shock length. But if I wasn’t going that route I would go with stock height Ranchos.

I gotcha. I don't take my jeep off road much at all and when I do its only a light trail on a camping trip. Its My daily driver so I'm just trying to get a comfortable but capable ride really. I'm also a little lazy lol. Thanks for the info.

Dang, I wish that I had read this thread before ordering a set for the rear of my Jeep. My Jeep has the 2.5 OME springs and my rear shock on the right side has recently made contact with the spring perch and is leaking. I figured that a set of these Rancho RS55256, flipped would give me the clearance needed. Now I am worried that they will be too long.

no way to tell without measuring.

In my case, I have about 2.5" of lift in the rear and the RS55256 is the right shock due to the lower shock mount rotating down for my SYE. It might be too long without an SYE, but the next shorter one is too short with it.
