New trailer project (Pack Mule?)

Thanks for the info @lowranger . A pic of your Jeep and trailer is what I was using to try and determine if it was in fact a Pack Mule. There were no legs, but I did see where I think they go on the inside of the tailgate. I looked a little closer underneath it tonight and some of the rear under the bed is flaking off pieces of rust. Don't know how severe it is yet. I figure worst case is I have to replace the floor.

I may try to come up with some kind of top at some point. What kind of hinge did you use for it?

What kind torsion axle did you use?

Good to hear about the coupler. It took me a minute to figure it out. LOL Is yours a 1-7/8 inch ball?

Do you have any good sources for getting stuff for fixing this up?

I used a heavy duty piano type hinge up front.
I'll have to look in my "Jeep" file to see if I can find the name of the torsion axle, but I think any good 2,000 lb torsion axle should work well for you.
I think my hitch is a 2", but would have to double check that to make sure. I have a lot of trailers, and are always towing something around.
I have used E-Trailer for several things, but any good trailer supply place will work.
Enjoy your trailer, they are great trailers and tow very good.

Thanks. I'm going to go out tomorrow and check one of the 2 inch balls and see if it fits it. The guy still had some gravel and junk in it and it was heavy as hell to try and move to hook up tot he Jeep. That may have been why I was hard to get on the 2 inch I tried first.

Let me know if you have anymore questions. And let me know what you find out about the hitch.

Thanks, I'm sure I will have more. It may take me a while to do stuff to it, it's not high on the completion priority list. It seems like all my time is taken up with work and being tired. LOL

Will do on the hitch ball.

There is no time limit on things like this. Just take your time and think things out.

I was just looking at those on the E-trailer website. I wonder if a 1,200 lbs or 2,000 lbs (or even higher) should be used. They look like it would be pretty easy to install by the video on E-trailer.com.
I'm not sure if you've used e-trailer ( https://www.etrailer.com/ ) before but I would rate them as one of the best companies I've ever dealt with on line. I ordered an air lift kit for the rear springs of my LJ at mid morning on New Year's eve and they were shipped out before noon. They also respond very quickly to any questions you have about their products. I've had nothing but good experiences with this company. (y)

EDIT:
This arrived on Thursday which is great considering the New Years holiday, postal shipping to Canada, customs, etc. If you want an air suspension kit for your TJ/LJ, according to the reviews this one seems pretty good. They even used a silver LJ like mine in the instructional video!

I've ordered a few things from them and like them very much. I really like how many different picture angles they provide of the products they sell and their product review videos. I accidently called them e-trailer, I forgot they don't have a hyphen.

The 2 inch ball does fit in there. It was really tight but moving it around loosened it up a little. I checked the 1-7/8 again and it didn't look like it was in any danger of coming out or anything, but it did move around more.

After putting a proper amount of air in the tires and using a 2 inch ball I drove it around some today and it tows a lot better than it did. I also repaired the ground wire that had been broken off and all the lights work properly except for one that was blown, which I replaced. The wiring isn’t in the best of shape so it will be replaced eventually. I think I’ll remove the added on square lights and just add a little 3/4 inch round red marker light on the rear side at some point.

I found this one today for $1500, about twice what I want to pay.

The price of used trailers can be all over the map. Granted, a lot depends on how much of a "starter kit" it is. My off road trailer build ( http://www.jeepcentral.ca/forums/showthread.php?3937-PCO6-s-Trailer-Build ) started out with a $200 find on Kijiji. I saw it in the morning and had it home later that day. If you're able to act quickly you can get some great deals.

This summer I'll be selling a utility trailer I built. I've been monitoring prices on Kijiji and based on some of the poor examples I've seen that are going for decent prices I should do well. I may even get my money back after using it for the last 10 years!
