ZJ Tie Rod Conversion

Not sure exactly how tooless this is if you have to
None,

If you have access to a welder MACHINE....you don't need any TOOLS, just pull the trigger or strike an arc and go. For those who don't know how a welder works.

I guess I mistakenly thought that there are still some people out there that actually like to work on and repair their vehicles and not just bolt on a bunch of fluff. So I guess that just shows my age that I can actually fix something myself without having to go to the internet and order a bunch of parts to be swapped out.

Or, you can just disregard any of the fixit yourself hints and tips and just bolt on all your pretty Mall Crawler parts...that is fine too if that's what you want to do, but maybe there might still be a few good people out there that would like to learn more about actually fixing / repairing things, for the knowledge if nothing else..
And last time I checked, next day free delivery doesn't do you a whole lot of good when you are broke down on the trail... Just saying..

Disclaimer:
This is not meant to be a rant, I'm just speaking my mind..🤪
What's left of it..

You have some valid points but come on, the parts we are suggesting here aren't fluff or mall crawler at all. They are affordable and very solid. Nobody at the mall will even know they are there. There are things that fit your description but this just seems a bit off base for a discussion about the ZJ tie rod upgrade.

No problem..👍
Maybe should have been in a "what to do in a pinch / temporary fix" thread..and true not all bolt on parts are Mall Crawler..(Sorry, just have had my personal fill of Angry Bird grills and light bars...old school you know....that feels better) 🤪😁

So yeah, maybe the wrong place for the info, but I still wanted to share it.

That's what happens when you get older, you tend to share info and advice a little bit more..

Yep my black pipe band aide is just that, a band aide. Yes I have run the fix on my TJ for a while now with intent to go OTK and Aluminum possibly hydro assist. It's a get you through till you can fix. And yes it is stronger than stock but probably not much.

I'm not sure if this is useful or not, but after doing a dozen or more of these for myself and others, I put this picture together for people in a local club to use.

When doing this upgrade, if I Order all the parts Chris mentioned, wouldn’t I still need an additional inner tie rod to attach to the pitman arm?

A lot of people on this thread are reusing their old adjusting sleeve and tie rod attached to the pitman arm. Chris’s parts list makes that assumption.

Thanks, one more question. I’ve read this entire thread... I understand that most people
“Are not “ replacing the right ( passenger side) TRE at the draglink. PN# 3095R. They say that it “is not” Part of the ZJ upgrade. However, even if it is a stock TJ part, why not replace it if you are replacing the other TRE,s?

No reason not to if you’re doing a complete refresh. On my LJ, all of the tie rod ends were either loose or spewing grease, and one of my adjusters sleeves was frozen up. I went ahead and bit the bullet and replaced all the parts, including the adjusters and that TRE you mentioned. I just pulled it apart in one piece, matched the measurements to my new one to get it close, and assembled all fresh parts.

Probably a dumb question , but where does the part number 3095R go ? I have read this whole thread, studied the pics posted and just dont see it. I want to do a total refresh ordering part numbers suggested, do I need the 3095R part ?

@Leroy_TJ
See page 4 fonz54 also asked this question. I don’t believe it is needed. Another member referred him to this link to help explain https://www.stu-offroad.com//steering/zjtie/tierod-1.htm

edit: Now I don’t know where part number 3095r was first mentioned but that’s a sock replacement tie rod end. Since we are doing the “ZJ tie rod end conversion” we upgrade the tie rod end with a ZJ one.

3095R is not needed if you go with the ZJ Tie rod upgrade. The ZJ tie rod has the TRE built into it.

I understand now, I got confused with all the part numbers.
Thanks

The picture I provided is the correct list of parts. Some people re-use their terminal or adjuster sleeve (ES2079s) , but for $13 it's not worth the hassle. Just make sure you coat them with anti-sieze during the install. This makes adjusting them later super easy.

I'm about to do this, and am still confused about this (sorry to beat the dead horse!).

I believe that the Moog ES3095R is the replacement passenger side tie rod end if you're re-using your TJ drag link? It's my understanding that the ZJ drag link's damper mount hole is at a different angle and can lead to interference with some aftermarket track bars (though some have no issues with that).

Since the ZJ drag link is the same strength as the TJ one, why not re-use it and just replace both tie rod ends and save the extra cash?
