Recommendations for trailer to haul the Jeep

hate to ask but would asking for a picture or 2 to be posted be out of line, sounds like a awesome set up!

I forgot to mention the 2 spare tires and this is before I added the tongue box between the tires and tongue jack along with 2 holders for propane tanks at each end of the tongue box.

To put that in perspective. My trailer has a 12'-8" deck. The sides are 14" tall down the sides, 20" tall at the front. There is 10" of platform past the front wall. The Tongue Jack is back in front of the platform that the tongue goes under. Tandem 5200 lb axles with brakes on both. It has a recessed tool box in the back that you drive over. It has a 50 gallon water tank between the axles under the deck and a self container water pump that runs off of the trailer battery that runs the electric tongue jack. The tail gate is 4' long, full width that locks with a vertical horse trailer door latch run horizontally. The tail gate raises and lowers with one hand since I built a load helper to balance it out with captured garage door springs, some cable and a pulley or two.

When we go out to the desert for 9-10 days at a time, we load firewood under the rear of the rig all the way back to the tail gate. Camp chairs, spare tire, Co2 tank, folding trash barrel, fake grass mat for the camper exit, box of tinder and girl scout juice, 4 6 gallon gas cans, and some odds and ends go under the rig and are never tied down. Just toss it in there and go.

The tongue box holds spare bits, coily cord connectors, some tools, hitch bits, draw bars for the hitch and some tire changing tools with enough room to store all the tie down straps.

The internal drive over wheel wells have doors that flip down to the inside. In those are spare fluids, spare driveshafts for the rig, belts, coolant, and other odds and ends but hardly full.

By all assessments, it would be considered a very small trailer since the tail gate closes almost against the rear bumper with the front tires against the inside of the front wall. The rig would not fit inside on the deck if the bumper did not go over the front wall.

Wow that sounds like a setup you have perfected over many many trips! I am just getting started but want to start with something I can build out to suit like you mention (down the line). Are you saying 20' is much longer than I would need? I'm leaning toward 18 or 20 based on availability and the reason for that is I want to be able to haul dirt bikes + jeep.

I'm not looking at 5th wheel because I plan to add a truck bed camper in future.

I bought a 16' tandem axle from CB trailers in Idaho a few years ago, I want to say it was about $2200 new - it's a fine trailer, plenty of stake pockets & brakes on both axles, but wish I had gone with the 18' so I could bring an ATV along. The 16' foot fits the TJ just fine, but in order to get the weight right I have to put it right in the center so there isn't room for much else. However I tow with a 1500, so there are more variables involved. If I had a more stout rear end in my truck I could pull the TJ all the way forward without completely squatting it's ass.

Not totally true.... If you want TOTAL redneckary you have to have a Red Neck ToyHauler (RNTH)

I do when I have the camper on which weighs 4500 lbs. That puts the 1200 lbs on the end of a 2 foot hitch extension to get out from under the camper step. When I don't have the camper on, I don't run it. The truck doesn't even know it is back there.

This is the style of hitch. It puts a receiver tube right under the OEM hitch tube so you can double up the extension.

The best part is when you hook up the bars with electric tongue jack. Lock the hitch, lift the tongue up a bit, kick the bars over onto their keepers, lower the tongue jack, kick up the drop leg, go have fun. My thumb almost gets tired from holding the button down.

I got kids who I plan on forcing to run the crank on the jack, that way my thumbs will be well rested.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm going to err on the side of heavy duty so 10k minimum. How do you feel about over wheels vs between wheels?

I lean towards a 8' wide deck over the wheels, I can do more with a trailer like that. But others may not have needs for the extra work for their trailers. It's a much higher trailer yes, But it's still 8' wide over all, vs 8'6" or 9' with the decks between the wheels, and still not a 8' wide deck. It's personal choice for each guys uses,,,gregg

What more do you do? I did find a couple deck overs but not sure if I can make use of it because my jeep is less than 7' wide

What part of Washington are you in? I’m pretty sure I have an extra set of weight bars and mounts (10k I believe) I could sell on the cheap. All ya née would be a receiver and I may have an extra one of them also

I'm up in Snohomish, I might be headed to Rochester for the trailer. I'll message you. What kind of hitch, Blaine says there is a specific one that works best.
