Should I re-gear to 4.88 with Tracklok (locked) carrier or use a new carrier?

Where did the breaks occur? The Dana 44 shafts are essentially the same in terms of where their weak spots are. A good set of CM's would go a long way in reliability...

Of course they both broke right at the ears. I totally know the Dana 44 and Dana 30 shafts are nearly the same there and completely spaced out on it here. One had a dried up ujoint when it broke, so I replaced the other side also before it failed. The other broke with a good spicer ujoint 6 months later. I'm thinking I bent the ear a bit since the old ujoint was...difficult... to get out.

Thank you for detailed explanation and video, but sorry for my ignorance — what does a good set of CM's in you suggestion mean?

Yes, 4.88s are finally in with front/rear Eaton elockers and broken in with 500 miles. I definitely agree that 4.88 with 33s are a bare minimum. And I must say it is a pleasure to cruise at 70s on highway with RPMs hovering around 3k. I definitely appreciate the pickup and ability to overtake on highway speeds. And as Jerry and pc1p have mentioned 5.13s will be definitely appreciated in Colorado terrain but I haven’t towed/pulled anything yet so can’t comment on that. I somehow feel that I might have lost a little bit of cruising ability at 70+ With 5.13s but then it’s a wild guess. Thank you again for the wonderful advice.

I’m looking at regearing my ‘06 6 speed LJ. I live in the Colorado mountains at over 9,000’. Want to use the Jeep as DD with some trails (nothing extreme). Currently have 33’s and ideally want 34’s in the future (current 2”ome +1”bl lift is too small for anything bigger) what gear ratio would you recommend. Still want to be able to go 80 downhill on the highway, but need major improvement over current 3:73 gears for going up hills on the highway
