@JMT jump on this. Just keep the rpms low while in 4 low and it will last a long time.
This is so awesome. I'm like in Jeep heaven right now. And the offer of a beer and busted knuckle night in Moab! 🤣 Isn't your crawl ratio like 99:1?

I didn't know you could do gears. Is there anything you can't do mechanically? I've read the Gear Bible a number of times. Almost sprung for the special tools I needed, but gave it to a shop. That day may come. I'd love to learn.

Sure there's a lot i can't do mechanically but I learned to do gears because I'd found it interesting.
I worked at a Ford dealership and they brought in their old mechanic to help me with my first gear install. I'd learned it in a college course but never done it on a vehicle.
I have setup a lot of gears since for club members.

After reading all your super low gear ratios, I am just coming to realize my Jeep is not so great! 🤣

It's a bigger deal with a manual transmission than with a automatic transmission. My crawl ratio isn't as impressive but as Jerry explains the automatic is capable of producing a lower crawl ratio by the way the torque converter works.

If I went much lower I’d need bigger brakes

My best recollection.

Mud - 4L and 2nd or 3rd
Snow - 4L 3rd or 4H 1st (depends on depth, kind of snow).

I don't do a lot of Mud and Snow though. I might Snow wheel 3 times a year. Mud I try to stay away from. If things will open back up on the W side of WA, I'll apparently find a lot of Mud!
You should be ok in first high but 4:88’s to 5.13’s would make high range gears more useable for M+S

With my STaK's and 46RE this is my ratio's with 5.13 gears

35.1315.6527.91---

You can go a little deeper since you have the 6 speed transmission. With your 4.56 gears here is where you'd be at with a 4:1 transfer case.

And then if you went to 5.13 gear.

Right now at 70 MPH your turning about 2772 RPM's
If you went to 5.13 gears you'd be about 3119 RPM's

Yep, those are my current RPM's with 456 gears and 33's. I'm excited to see how much difference there is from a crawl ratio of 56 to 81+. I had forgotten about the Tera 4:1 as an option, and finding a Rubi TCase is pretty hard. I almost had one about 6 months ago, but the guy was trading it in for the install of the Atlas. Arghhh! But it all works out and this will be a great mod, arguably one of the most significant for rocks.

And honestly turning 3100 RPM's isn't that bad for the 4.0 if you decided to go to 5.13 gears. And then when you go up to 35" tires you're good too. Of course you could wait until you are ready to go to 35" tires to regear. And put a Dana 44 in front and you could go with 5.38 gears.... HEHEHE, love spending others money...

Yeah, I figured a move to 513 would work pretty well with 35's too. They'd even work with 488's and I planted a set of 35's on my 456's for a week. It wasn't bad at all, but I'd prefer 488's on the street. These days I drive it only a few times a week, so it's more and more getting time on the trail. In a couple of years I may look for another DD, and just set the Jeep aside as a trailer queen. We'll see.

Night and day.

Think no clutch ever and throttle is completely optional, depending on your gear choice. In 1st low I can pull the clutch facing a vertical climb and the jeep just goes. On start up mid obstacle you can be fully on the brake and pull the clutch and the jeep will start moving. The only use of my hand throttle now is to bring up the rpms while running the york.

You will love it.

Yep I never used the clutch once I had the 4:1 in mine in low range. You need to stop? Turn off the engine. Start going again just crank it in 1st gear and boom it starts and is a lot smoother becasue you're not using the clutch. It's a little hard on the starter but I have only ever had 1 fail and when I had a manual rig I did this on more than one rig.

That sounds impossible, but I know it’s true. We’ll see how close I can get to that elegance.
