Improve My Perspective on Automatic Transmissions

Methinks you have not driven an automatic with deep gearing on an extremely steep downhill grade. In 4Low and locked in Low, when on a scary steep downhill grade, my automatic with 5.38 gearing, 4:1 tcase and 35" tires will will have people behind me riding their brakes to keep from running into me.
He should try following a Rubicrawler in low low.

I came from the same thought, manuals were the way to go. I came from the Cj world almost 30 years ago.. it was the way to go back then. To echo everyone’s comments, my view has changed. I’ve been doing more rock crawling and having a manual sorta kinda sucks. It’s doable, but it’s just a lot of extra work and stress.

One thing that I don’t think anyone mentioned and I learned this the hard way a long time ago, but a manual can suck in mud also... like literally. I got stuck in a huge mud hole, went to try and back out. As soon as I pressed the clutch, mud got in between the clutch and flywheel. My day was over. I had to pull the transmission. Lesson learned!

I still love driving a manual, I’ve had my fair share. If I ever swap motors or my transmission fails, I’m swapping to an auto

Towed a JK across Drummond that did that.

That would be something to see or follow ! I am talking DEEP crawl ratios.
166.23 to 1 is impressive! Hell Jerry's 61.11 to 1 is impressive for an auto. Jeep !
However if I had cubic dollars I would like to see what wheelin in something like a Unimog with a crawler box would be like.
4000 to 1 is something hard to wrap your head around. That is over 65 TIMES lower ratio than Jerry's Jeep.
It is hard to think of moving 1 foot a minute with the engine at 1500 rpm.
Of course my Jeep's crawl ratio of 42.71 is like Bonneville gears in comparison :ROFLMAO:
I guess that's what I get in an $ 11,000 dollar TJ. LOL

~107.39:1 in my auto on low low is as low as I’d need to go.

I get exactly what you're saying - and its all true. But those ratios don't come cheap.

Depends on who you are. If you wanted the fastest lap times today you would go out and get a dual clutch auto. If you want to enjoy the technical aspect and feel of shifting but slower times you go manual. Same for off roading. If you want to hit the gas and go up the trail with no thoughts automatic is for you. I enjoy learning to push my abilities and learn my trucks limits. Yes it's harder. Yes you can die and damage things easier. Manuals in my mind are more engaging, more satisfying, and push myself to be a better driver, on and off road.

Completely agree. There's three components to driving: The driver and the machine, the driver and the road/trail/terrain/whatever, and the driver and other drivers. The first is by far the most enjoyable to me the 2nd, is 2nd, but interacting with the other assholes on the road is a very distant 3rd! Notice I said "other assholes"! :D

Of course DEEP reduction isn't cheap! It take Cubic Dollars !!!
I just like the concept of having options 4000/1 or 100/1 or 65/1 or 42/1
You pick the gear that is appropriate for the situation.

You haven't wheeled where the manual starts to become a hindrance.

4000/1? There comes a point where gear reduction isn't really useful beyond bragging rights and winning the slowest race. With an auto, you get to have low reduction whenever you need it, making the whole gear reduction issue moot.

As long as your trans cooler is up to the task hour after hour...............;)

Since switching to auto I can make it up stuff that my dad can’t in his manual. Only other difference in our Jeeps is he’s got a few more steel parts so maybe slightly heavier.

I have. It taught me limits. It also pushed me to learn why and how I can improve. I’ve seen your posts and I know you do the same. It’s fine if you are tired of driving a manual off-road but don’t say that it’s the transmissions fault.

Many people have lost the art and knowledge of driving a manual and end up blaming the transmission instead of themselves. My clutch only lasted 10k miles, I can’t get into reverse, I just drove through a mud puddle and now my clutch doesn’t work, I can’t get up this hill without stalling. We all hear it. 9 times out of 10 it’s the driver. Yes there will be a point that your jeep will need more modifications to over come that hinderance but the same goes for every transmission.
