To make the overdrive switch still function but turn off automatically as you shift into gear (which is about when I think about it.)

Get a common 4 or 5 pin lighting relay, I used Dorman part #88069 but a 4 pin works if it operates the same..there are different kinds.

1. Find the green/white back up wire at the drivers side rocker panel...run that to pin 86

2. Tap the overdrive swiitch green wire to pin 30

3. Tap the overdrive switch blue wire to 87 (this may be orange on some models)

4 . Run 85 to ground

87a is not used.

The reverse light switch wire pulses the overdrive switch when you pass reverse to drive , just like pushing the button does.

It stays off until you turn off the ignition or manually overide it for higher speed driving. In effect, the green/white reverse wire power now does for you what your finger did, all else remains the same.

Thanks to @Jamison C for advising me, tune in tomorrow as we explain how the pyramids were built.

Hope you auto guys like this as much as I do.

Will it get seen here Chris ?

Absolutely

My guess is within the next few days you're going to have a ton of people doing this.

The 42RLE is not such a bad transmission when the overdrive is off.

Somebody get this guy a free soft shackle or something

I’m no pervert! Just a T shirt is fine.

Sort of an inside joke....I had an unreal cousin, made millions but had no education at all...his business partner called him a narcissist....he replied “I‘ve never done that to another man!”

uh, Lonnie, it don’t mean that.

I was unsure how passing through reverse would work to turn on the overdrive off light ...its instantaneous.

Once you do this you will really enjoy being able to forget about it. It works as if it were designed that way intentionally.

You will be suprised how good it feels to get rid of one annoyance that is ever present when you start up.

This is truly one of the things that annoys me when I drive the LJ. This fix is super simple and awesome. You get the class star sticker!

Love it!
What happens if you go r-d-r-d etc like your rocking it out of a snow bank?
It doesn’t matter it works just like the switch does....generally...Once you turn it off it stays off until you hit the switch or turn off the ignition.

So once you put the vehicle in gear it will switch it to Off and it will stay that way unless you change it with the switch manually or turn off the ignition and reset.

I don’t know why the further pulses don’t toggle it back-and-forth but they do not. That’s the difference ... the pulse turns it off the first time the shifter passes reverse ...but it doesn’t turn it back on like hitting the switch does if you pass reverse either way. It stays off unless you manually override it or turn off and restart the vehicle.

It actually works just like you need if you prefer the overdrive off most of the time.

I was just contemplating yesterday how there had to be a way to wire this where it did the reverse. Then this thread popped up. Kudos.

Test the green/white wire at the tub ...I used a little test light and put the jeep in reverse just to make sure I had the right one.

Put that on your job resume boys. Looks like i’m up for a raise ....
We had to find that stupid reverse light wire for a back up camera system. If you put it into reverse, the system would default to the front facing camera and without that momentary trigger from the reverse lights when you shifted from park to reverse, it didn't work right. All due to the stereo installer not naming the camera inputs correctly.

Thanks for this. I'll definitely be doing this eventually.

If you think about it you can pre-wire the relay and have a long leg to reach to the trigger wire and the installation is going to go pretty fast then you’re down to a ground and three taps.

I am not gifted at all on this type of work....Don’t be intimidated , it’s just not very complicated.
