Rocky Mountain Billy Goat Build

The Savvy one required me to drill the four holes in the center.
I’ve been thinking I’d like the ability to throw the carrier on when I don’t have space for my spare inside, so I might drill those out and countersink them though I guess that would require snubber holes too. Maybe I won’t bother!

Talking yourself out of it. I’ve done that.

Wrapping up the rear lighting for now, while I think I prefer to look/shape of the Savvy’s I’m pretty happy with these for now (especially for almost $100 less with a better warranty).

I didn’t want to splice into the harness at all so instead I clipped the OEM pigtail and wired up to that

The OEM lights just ground to the tub, so I didn’t change anything conceptually there. I just wired the ground to a ring terminal and smashed it behind the light with the bolt.

The screws that came with this were larger than OEM (1/4x20) - after debating if I wanted the ability to put OEM back on someday I drilled and tapped the holes slightly larger.

Last bit of aluminum for now, this is the Savvy valence which isn’t finished annoyingly like the GR tailgate. I need to see if the savvy and GR holes align in the tailgate...

Picture request of anyone with the savvy tailgate skin, could you take a picture with a measuring tape across the top holes? @starkey480 and @JMT I think are the two I know of with it off the top of my head...

@rasband, let me know what you come up with. Did the best I could with the pic. Little hard to take.

I got the Gold Coast Distributor flasher relay and now my hazards work again. One thing I’ve noticed with both relays is that it audibly clicks a few times after the blinker is off. While it’s not important, I’ll probably try the super bright leds that tworley mentioned up front to see.

On another topic, I’m a little irritated with my new soft top - the spring clip in the door surround disappeared and getting on the phone with bestop hasn’t been easy (60th+ in the queue each attempt). Hopefully I get through eventually since I just traded the old surrounds away!

I tried chatting with Bestop in early May and it was the same. I started somewhere in the 40-50 range in the queue, took about 6 hours to finally chat with someone. The guy wasn't very knowledgeable about the products at all. I pointed out that a part he recommended said very clearly on the item page that it was not for Unlimited models and he acted like it was news to him. He said he needed a minute to look something up, then ended the chat without answering my question!

I ordered a replacement side window for my factory soft top beginning of February. When I finally got someone on the phone in April to check on my order, I got crickets. Still waiting.

Post up the results of the flasher. Mine does the extra click's and it drives me nuts.

Seems like a pain now that I've made the move to flat fenders with LED's. Haven't connected them yet, and after reading this post, I'm unsure of what to do next. Looking for some advice from the group. Just bought this TJ a few weeks ago (2000)...

My headlights and tail lights are still stock/not LED, but now that I've lost my front turn signals and side markers, I need to determine the best path forward.

With the LED's in the new tube fenders, I'm guessing I'd need to get a new turn signal flasher to replace above the steering column. BUT, if I do that, do I need to also then replace both my head and tail lights too for everything to function correctly too?

I'm contemplating just getting the JK lights and cutting the holes in the grill, but I'm concerned about messing them up. Then I'd still have to decide about whether or not to do the side markers on the new fenders...

It's things like this that just frustrate me to the point of doing nothing, which I don't want to do.

Any advice would truly be appreciated!

The headlights are a separate concern (not really any at all) - so don't worry about them (that is unless you do the halo style with the blinker integrated). If you stick with halogen tails, you should be fine, or halogen fronts with LED tails - the issue seems to be when you go all 4 to LEDs. From what I understand you could add a resister in-line to up the resistance as another option.

I'm happy with my JK turn signals, it looks more CJ-ish.

How difficult was cutting the holes for the lights? Do you have side markers too?

The lights weren't bad - just use lots of masking tape to draw and redraw several times. I haven't spend the time to figure out the markers yet, that will be after my hilines are on.

For the JK lights I just got my jeep on level ground, then drew a level line down from the bezel of the headlamp. I knew I wanted my turn signal to be even with that on the inner edge.

I have a 2000 TJ and all the lighting is LED, the 97 - 2000 TJ’s use a different flasher relay (4 blade) and that might have something to do with it.
