What Manual Transmission for an LS Swap?

I dont have the money for another car to tow the Jeep so i need to daily this thing too.
You also have another 2 years before you are going to pass emissions inspection in Denton county with a swap.

I totally agree Munchie, I am just saying no OD is not the biggest problem to overcome. Do you commute 70 miles a day?
Big Block Chevelles didn't come with an overdrive, just a M-21 Muncie. Yet they were a lot of fun. ;)
Remember, many times we should think like a trucking company thinks, whats your cost per mile?
What does that overdrive manual trans cost, VS what does it save in cost per gallon of fuel.
You may find if you want deep gears for off road , having no OD and a Gen 3 V-8 likely would have similar mileage to a stock TJ.
Best of luck with your build, and have FUN !

Why can't he do a emissions legal swap? What are the laws there?
OBD scan has to match the vin. No exceptions. It's actually more difficult here to do a legal swap than California. 25 years old is exempt for now.

That sucks. Okay so let me ask it this way.
I have a PCM in my Jeep with my Dodge V-8 swap that has my Jeeps VIN# in the PCM. So the PCM matches the vin would that pass?

Maybe... I have a good friend of mine that does these inspections, he would probably know. When I bought mine it had a leaking headgasket and ticking lifters, so my plan was to swap an l83 5.3 setup. After speaking with him and finding out I couldn't get it inspected I decided to stay with the 4.0. Some people will "buy" a sticker from a shady shop to get around it, but they started doing a huge crackdown a few years back. They went into one shop and arrested a few techs and threw them in jail. Then they went after the customers who bought the stickers. Charged them all with "tampering with government document fraud". I can't have that with my job, so legal it is. I'm not sure if it's for the same reason or not, but I remember when researching the Cummins R2.8 Repower stuff that it's not available in Texas due to state law. You can buy it in California, but not Texas??? Quote from their site: "Due to state/provincial law restrictions, these engines are not currently available for purchase in the state of Texas, state of West Virginia or the province of Quebec."

WOW never knew. That is too bad for those wanting to do a emissions legal swap.

This is one of the big things I try to push when asked about doing engine swaps. It isn't 1970 anymore where you can just swap whatever into something. Now granted my 1997 TJ doesn't have some of the more complex emissions equipment that some do but I made it a point to keep to legal. I live where there isn't any testing but you never know when or if they'll decide to start.
It's a PITA to get it all installed but it sure beats having to park it.

You cannot get registration renewed without an inspection first. We have those big window stickers and they change the colors every few years to make it more visible to the police.

I'm fortunate to have a business that has a dealer license, so we have dealer and in transit plates. Problem is driving out of state and the tollways.

Is this only around Dallas/Ft Worth or all of Texas?

Washington used to have emissions testing but only for certain areas. Where I live there isn't any so my ex FIL use to register his older truck that wouldn't pass at my place.

It's by county. The rural areas only have a safety inspection. Tires, brakes, lights, horn, and stuff like that. The metro areas and suburbs have the emission inspections. Dallas / Fort Worth has 5 or so counties that have the emission portion of the inspection.

OK. It's still interesting that some areas have stricter regulations than CA.

Contact Novak about the AX15 they offer. It's a improved model so it's supposed to be stronger than a stock version. If you're spending the money and time do it right.
I believe the AX15 that Novak sells is the same as the "Terminator AX15" that Rockland Standard Gear sells.
It's the Toyota version which I think they used behind the V8 trucks.
Anyway. I had this trans in my old TJ that I parted out.
I sold the complete drivetrain (AX15, 241OR, Super8.8, HP30) to a fellow jeeper.
He did a GM 6.0 swap in his Jeep. Everything held up fine behind the 6.0.

I adapted my stock 150k mile NV3550 to a 5.3 with headers and a mild cam. Highway driving is fantastic, even without the doors and top on. Getting up to 90mph is now a breeze. My TJ is a street rod, not trail going, so for my application the NV3550 is doing fine so far. But I am hesitant on throwing more power at it. I think what would make it more streetable with my 32” tires would be going from a 3.05 to 3.73. I have been driving around a flooring it quite a bit since March when I first got it road worthy. Thats my $0.02
