Thanks Guys, Looks like the cable shifter is a good solution ,, but it is currently unavailable from Amazon. I'll check some other sources here in Canada. I'll check out the shifter bracket too.

Hey Jerry, is this part number still valid? There is a warning message on the amazon.ca page that suggests this will not fit a 1998 jeep wrangler TJ. A garage here in Canada quoted $699.00 CAD to replace the whole assembly. I'm not sure how much of that is labor, and as you mentioned that...

Mine has it. When I first looked under the hood (when I was buying the Jeep), I thought the PO didn't know any better and had the battery put in backwards, but no it was a design engineer goof up. Even with the guard, it still somewhat of a hazard. Disconnect the negative terminal first.

Hi, I'm planning to replace both fenders with new ones on my 1998 tj. Can anyone with that experience tell me what "extras" do I need to have on hand just in case the removal process breaks stuff. Like, do the plastic nuts hold up OK for replacement? How about extra screws, bolts etc. ...
