Scientists are being elevated to the level of priests (pick a religion). Religion and science are fertile ground for totalitarian governments to keep the populous "in line". It's as old as the witchdoctor who was aligned with the leaders of tribes around the world. Most people can be scared by religion and science because they are presented as they are hard to understand and that "experts" are needed to tell you what to follow to keep you from "bad" things.
