True story time. My late Uncle Junior lost his leg, part of his arm and stomach outside Saint-Lô Normandy. Turns out German field artillery and M2 half tracks don’t play well together. His words, not mine. Everyone in the track was KIA, or so they thought. According to Uncle Junior, when graves registration came to collect, only then was it discovered he was “not completely dead yet”. He was in VA hospitals until 1946-7. Married one of his nurses, Aunt Joy.
Uncle Junior would buy a new Cadillac every couple years. He always said when the ashtray filled up it was time for a new one. He didn’t smoke, LOL. He was driving home one evening and was involved in an accident, during which his leg popped off and was stuck in the pedals somehow. Family legend (and late Aunt Joy swore it was true) has it he crawled out of the Caddy since he couldn’t stand without it or his crutches in the trunk, and asked a bystander if she could help by handing him his leg as it was still in the car. She promptly fainted.
