A waaaaaaaaay over simplification of taxes.... Forgotten or left out here are:
Employment taxes that you never see.... but your company does.
Social Security taxes... 1/2 you see the other half you don't.... by design.
All the goods and services you consume are taxed MULTIPLE times before you pay for them and pay sales tax. Most food has been transported 5 to 8 times between it's source and the store. Each time it's taxed. So you're paying sales tax on something that's already 30% taxed.
Taxes on raw materials that end up in components of goods and services. Raw Steel is about 25% taxed BEFORE it's shipped to a fabrication facility for example. So then it becomes a car part then is taxed when tranported... then taxed with the part is put into another factory to make an assembly... then taxed again when transported to the assembly line... then taxed again when the finished product is warehoused.... then taxed again when transported to a store.
Serviced (Accounting, Architecture, Engineering, Legal and on and on...) are all taxed at the revenue level and those costs are embedded in the cost for the services. In my case roughly 25% of my hourly rate is taxes/fees/excises etc.
I see these accountings and it pisses me off because they are so simple and dramatically off.
My favorite are the FCC taxes (called fees) that are charged to entities who broadcast or use wavelengths that are regulated. MANY OF THESE FEES AREA NOT ALLOWED TO BE ITEMIZED on the bills. For instance, a Cell Phone bill is about 20% tax.... yet they cannot list this by law. Many other small fees and taxes the Feds charge are also not allowed to be itemized.
Reason Magazine and the CATO Institute tried to account for all of the embedded taxes and found that if you are in the Median income range for a single person in the US ($58K or so) your total tax burden is round 55% of everything you purchase, consume and do (Use taxes etc.). THIS DOESN'T INCLUDE your state, local and federal income taxes, SS taxes or Medicare taxes..... those are on top of the 55% number.
Someone has to pay for the 23M Federal workers and the additional 19.5M state workers.
