I'm 19. I make $21.78 an hour, which is golden for my age. I get 3 weeks vacation a year. I get to test and build the electronics behind SpaceX, Boeing, NASA etc. rocket engine testing at my ripe old age. Tomorrow NASA is awarding the contractor employee's 4 hours pay for tomorrow, all of us can just leave at 11 instead of 4. It's a hell of a gig and I'm having a great time.
Kicker is, all I have is a technical certificate from a local community college. I haven't paid more than $500 out of pocket for it. I'm halfway thru my associates right now (required for the apprenticeship), and it is completely paid for by the company.
(Now I'll be an ass) These absolute shit-brains taking loans out, without even having a job, on the near or complete entirety of their 4 year university degree getting payouts out of OUR paychecks genuinely pisses me off. A degree doesn't guarantee anyone a job. What sense does it make to "borrow" $200,000 with no guaranteed return? Sure, drinking and fucking off on campus is great but you can do the same thing for a few hundred bucks a year at a tech school or comm college. Worst part is, there are children whose parents don't seem to give a fuck that they're signing their lives away in the first place. And in the end, the people who did play their cards right are paying for it.
That said, an education shouldn't be a damn near lifelong investment either. People should be able to do whatever they want without taking out the equivalent of a mortgage.
I've always said that if someone doesn't understand what the term "loan" means, they are probably not college material.
What really sucks is that we're paying for degrees in Underwater Basket Weaving and Gender Studies, degrees that have little to no application in the workplace.
But as long as people will sign up for them colleges will offer them.

Nurses shouldn't have to pay a dime. Same with doctors, physicians, etc.
But what absolute dumb fuck takes a loan out on gender studies, music, or philosophy. Unless you're the best at it, you WILL NOT make money from it.

I personally don't think (especially and mostly nurses) should owe money to do what they do. That's just my opinion.
I have a LOT of nurses in my family. Their job SUCKS complete ass and they aren't appreciated at all.
Lots of jobs suck! My job sucks! But it pays damn good! Nursing also pays damn good, doctoring pays enormously well if your good at it and smart about getting your education.
Tell em to get another job if they don't like it.

If only. Every ER around me is operating at a fraction of it's capacity due to nurse and ER doctor shortages. That's not exactly something I'd want everyone to just find another job in... but that's just me I guess.
Look, I get it. It's hard and hard jobs suck.
I once made the foolish mistake of calculating my hourly wage on the flight deck of a cruiser in the Persian gulf while wearing a proximity suit...I was making less than 2 bucks and hour. I know about shitty jobs.
But that shitty job helped me pay for this shitty job.
Let's just say it was a damn good investment.
But I don't care if Christ himself comes down and says he needs to go to college to save the world from sin, he shouldn't be doing it on taxpayer dollars.

I guess I should unpack my statement a little more. We don't live in a perfect world. If we did, we'd all be debt free dicking around in a hot tub all day. But, we aren't. Realistically speaking, with the workload and pay of a typical ER nurse, I don't believe they should have to incur the amount of debt many of them do. The decision to actually do so and commit to that debt would be a different ball game. Something as necessary as ER staff sits different with me IMO. Obviously there's gonna be some personal expense of an education. If it were up to me it'd be much, much less. But I'm a electronics technician turd so I suppose it ain't my problem.
However I would agree, as I said in bold, I wouldn't make rash financial decisions before jumping into that career path.
