Unfortunately this story turned out to be satire. I was really hoping it was real
This was a bit of a story. All Speed Queens seem to be within $100 or so of each other - at least the top loaders are. So about $1400-$1500. Went to my local SQ dealer on my way to dance class yesterday. Guy told me he couldn't sell me one, couldn't even order one, and didn't know when he would be able to - high demand, blah, blah, blah.
However - while I was there, they just happened to have a SQ commercial model on the floor. Its the exact same thing as the residential, except it has a real mechanical dial on it. The residentials have knobs connected via computer or a membrane keypad setup, your choice. I told the guy that I'd MUCH rather have the commercial with the mechanical controls. He told me that he couldn't sell me one (even if he had them, which he didn't), and would get into a bunch of trouble with SQ if he did.
Well, we'll see about that. Came home, and got on the computer. Found an outfit in Orlando that appeared to have stock on the residential versions. Left that tab open and kept on looking. Turns out, the commercial version is the same price as the residential. Started looking for the commercial model - found one in Jacksonville at a commercial laundry supplier for $1015! Called them to check stock, yep, 5 on hand. The "right guy" to talk to about the dryer wouldn't be in until Tuesday, but you probably should go ahead and do a web order to get the washer reserved. So I did. I'll take the Jeep and the utility trailer up to Jax Tuesday and pick it up, and talk to "the guy" about a gas dryer while I'm there - I couldn't find the matching dryer on their webpage. Push comes to shove, I'll keep using my current (electric) dryer - those last forever anyway.
So either this laundry supply house has more leeway, or they just don't care - anybody with a credit card and a utility trailer can apparently buy one. We'll see if I actually roll into my driveway with the thing on the trailer, but its encouraging thus far.
Just received an email saying it would be ready for pickup on Monday. Fingers crossed...
