Theres a shift in Idaho but they still voted for the R's at nearly 70%.
I grew up in Boise and left town in 85 and the state in 88. In that entire time (25 years) Idaho had a Democrat Governor and one Democrat Senator and one Democrat House Member. The legislature was taken over by Libertarians in the early 80's for a few years.
The farmers loved their subsidies and the "Agra-Dems" were the ones pushing them in those days... So... Libertarian leaning people who wanted subsidies.In the late 70's Idaho Governor Cecil Andrus was appointed Secretary of the Interior by Carter... So Idaho wasn't always as "Red" as it is now.
Sounds a little more socialist than Libertarian . It's good that the conservative LA , San Diego , cops started retiring there in the 80's .

They may be considered conservative for LA and SD, but they caused more havoc than most native Idahoan liberals could have ever dreamed of. They come up here after selling multi-million dollar homes and buy homes for cash (more or less) then they get involved with politics and start complaining about how little the FD, PD, and state retirees in Idaho make. So they vote to pass larger and larger wage packages and that in turn drives taxes up and screws everyone else in the area. Challis is no exception to that bull shit either. COVID money and CA refugees fleeing the lockdowns came up here and remotely work from home. The average rent tripled seemingly over night. The cost of bare unimproved land over doubled. The cost of buying a home without acreage nearly tripled. Homes/Ranches with 100 acres or more at lease doubled in price. Pre-COVID you'd be hard pressed to find a listing for 6 figures or more... Now they're all over the place.
Well... the Libertarians are in the mountains and woods... farmers and ranchers along the snake river in the south. The two factions used to truly fight in the State House back in the day.... When Idaho crossed 1M people, 90% of them lived in southern Idaho along the snake river plateau... the other 10% lived out there in state legislative districts with less than 100 people.
