This issue is kickback when the engine tries to run backwards. I notice my jeep does it sometimes, usually after a crank and fire that doesn't quite get it started. Sometimes the following attempt you can hear the starter crank for a bit and then completely stop for a second before cranking again.
Not sure which is more annoying... and I'm of Scottish ancestry.

Agreed but the gap isn't that wide for me. I still have PTSD every time I hear "It's a long way to the top".
