During 2 weeks of deer camp when I lived in Wisconsin, we called it, "breaking frost" and depending on what was for dinner the night before, the challenge was to see who could hold off the longest before needing to go first!

The last year I went, one of the guys finally had the brilliant idea to take a propane Coleman lantern out to the out house as soon as got up and by the time he had his first cup it was actually warmed up enough inside to be somewhat comfortable.

Going in the field in Alaska was similar to this.. We had a NEWB who didn't listen to the rules of using the shitter... And the lower enlisted had their own shitter tent... NCO's had ours that we made sure had a stove in it and made sure there was fuel to keep it going....

-20* outside you have to sit and rub the seat with all the gear on... Then drop your outer wear down with your long handles still on and rub the seat some more... Then get down to just your skivvies and rub the seat again..... Now you can drop and sit...

If not you'll be YELLING for help... Had to unscrew the seat off the 3 hole shitter and carry the guy inside the tent to thaw his ass out long enough to finally pull the seat off his raw ass... He was lucky it was before the age of cell phones and cameras...
