BOSTON — In a devastating blow to democracy itself, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was forced to watch in horror as city officials canceled a groundbreaking $7,500 grant program that would have provided queer immigrants with essential wellness vouchers for yoga classes, massages, and “affirmative breathing exercises.”
Sources close to the mayor confirmed the program, dubbed “Project Belonging Matters,” was “literally the only thing standing between us and fascism” before an intolerant mob of taxpayers and mean tweets forced the LGBTQ+ immigrant organization to return the money in full.
“This is a dark day for Boston,” said a visibly distraught Mayor Wu at a press conference, her face twisted in the kind of existential pain usually reserved for when someone suggests maybe the city should fix potholes instead of funding spiritual colonics for asylum seekers. “Without taxpayer-funded downward dog for undocumented queer newcomers, how are we supposed to heal from the trauma of existing in a country that still has borders?”
The organization’s founder expressed relief at returning the funds, citing an “overwhelming wave of right-wing death threats” that apparently included the horrifying suggestion that city money should go toward, like, actual housing or job training or something.
At press time, Mayor Wu was reportedly considering an emergency executive order to rename Boston “The People’s Republic of Stretchy Pants” in hopes of preventing further democratic collapse.
