A Jew, a Hindu, and a lawyer get lost in the countryside while hiking. The sun sets and they’re wandering around hopelessly in the gloom when they see the lights of a farmhouse.
They knock on the door and explain their situation to the farmer, asking if they might sleep the night here. He says, “well, we don’t have any more beds. But two of you can sleep in the vacant small henhouse and the third can sleep in the warm barn. Both are clean and dry and have fresh hay that will be comfortable.”
The Hindu likes his privacy, so he volunteers to sleep in the barn. The other two are about to doze off in the chicken house when there’s a knock on the door. They open it, it’s the Hindu. He says, “I can’t sleep in the barn! There’s a cow in there and cows are holy. I cannot disrespect the cow by sleeping in the barn alongside her. I must sleep here in the henhouse.”
So the Jew volunteers to sleep in the barn. But shortly there’s a knock, they open the door, it’s the Jew. “I can’t sleep in the barn! There’s a pig in there! Pigs are unclean and no Jew can sleep alongside one. I must sleep in the henhouse after all.”
So the Lawyer sighs and agrees to sleep in the barn.
A few minutes later there’s a knock at the door. They open the door, it’s the cow and the pig.
