Even if you don't believe in God, there's a very practical reason for this. Who is the ultimate decider of what's right? Denying an external source of truth means whoever is at the top of government (king, chairman, dictator) makes the decision, enabling incredible, self-serving corruption that destroys the country.
Nope. A corrupt 'leader' will invoke whatever deity to justify his actions, however heinous; then persecute those who don't believe in that exact deity in the exact way the leader does. That's how that works. Its particularly egregious with monotheistic belief systems, but none are immune. We're seeing it right now.
I have been in a Buc-ee's once. Only once! We were driving from Houston to Louisiana. It was morning. I wanted ... No, NEEDED ... a biscuit in the way only a boy from the deep south can need a biscuit in the morning. I went to the deli, asked for a biscuit. "We don't have biscuits. Do you want a crossoint?"
Hell, no, I do NOT want a crossoint. I can't even spell crossoint! I'm in south-east Texas. It's 8:30 in the AM. You don't have a biscuit on the premises?
I had words. I called down curses on the deli manger and the owners of the chain. I am not certain, as I left immediately, but I may have been eternally trespassed from all Buc-ee's locations. I don't care. Won't give my money to a corporation that is run by a bunch of damned yankees that have no concept of southern breakfast culinary culture.
ETA: My wife adds that she even remembers this event of many years ago.
