Arizona Rock Crawler

That is a bit scary. How does one snap off bolts in a torque converter without there being some major underlying issue?
I have no idea. I was wondering the same thing. Only thing I can think of is over tightening the bolt against the back wall of the hole. But that would have happened during an install not a removal...

Never underestimate a previous owner. Maybe the bolts they used were too long?

Unless the threaded weldments are not threaded all the way through, the converter shell won't stop a bolt. They are not very thick.
It makes very little sense. I cant come up with a good reason why 2 of those would be broken.

I’ll test out the threads tomorrow. Didn’t have enough time to bolt up the tranny today.
Alternate theory, the bolt heads were stripped when they were removing the trans and had to cut the bolt heads off to remove it from the flexplate?

Here’s what it looked like

This is where I left off yesterday. I got the trans in place and fit it over the guide pins. Then realized this bracket was blocking me from sliding the bolt through. Then realized my tow strap was blocking the bolt to take off the bracket. So after all that lining up the trans I had to drop it, I strap it, and take that bracket off. I called it a day there. Not sure I will get any work done today but maybe!

Very possible but they are typically odd bolts in that the head size is larger than typical. I've messed with quite a few and you'd have to be pretty special to even begin to get one to round off and start stripping. Your picture shows they likely were just in a hurry and cut the heads off.

Most previous owners are truly quite special

I will. Just not yet. Im putting a temp gauge in now and will monitor the temps but will most likely put a setrab cooler in once it’s warmer out.
Let me translate that for those following along. I'm going to wait until it gets too hot to drive the rig anywhere whilst forgetting that also means it is too damn hot to work on it and by the time I figure that out it will be fall again and cool enough that it doesn't matter.

The only previous owner I love is the one who previously owned my garage. He left a portable swamp cooler in there that I blast in the summer. I’ll get the cooler done. Just needed to break the project into manageable chunks.

Wasn’t able to work yesterday. Today I got the
Tranny bolted up
Flexplate bolted to torque converter
Electrical stuff plugged in. Shoutout to @Lou for making me a harness so that the NSS is plug and play.
Transfer case back on.

I don’t have to work until 6 pm tomorrow so should be able to get this wrapped up tomorrow if all goes well.

This thread reminds me of that old gospel song, "one day at a time, sweet Jesus."

Exactly. I don’t even know how to do the tomorrow jobs yet just been breaking it into manageable chunks each day.

I'm thinking about dropping my tranny Garrett, to put in a new clutch. Seeing how much of a PITA it is, I may just want to do a 32rh swap! 🤣 Actually looking at 1998 TJ right now that is auto and I assume has the 32rh. Asking $6900 on a rebuilt title. I'm thinking of offering $5200.

Not a bad call. I spent 2k on all of my auto swap stuff. So if you could swap everything and sell it again or part the rest out you’d probably come out more ahead than me!

Ran into a little hiccup today. The dipstick and tube was by far the hardest part to get ahold of. It’s discontinued everywhere and at the time I found one on eBay. Turns out it’s the wrong one and they mislabeled it. Searched all morning and found one in New York. Until that gets here I will get everything else finished but kind of bummed because I thought I could finish today.
