Basically stock Jeeps doing stock Jeep stuff...

With all the discussions around upgrading and modifying our TJ's around here, I thought it might be refreshing to see and hear about basically stock Tjs doing stock TJ stuff.

I'll start. Taking my basically stock TJ back into the pucker brush this coming weekend after Elk. Waaaay back into the pucker brush.

Well, my Jeep isn't 100% stock, but I'm still running stock suspension with no lift and tires that are barely bigger than stock. This is some stuff that I've posted before elsewhere, but it was from a trip at Spider Lake Trails near Pine River, MN and was without any lift, lockers, etc. Scraped the skid plate a few times, but other than that, no trouble.

In all the wanting to mod things, I think a lot of people forget just how capable a stock Jeep is. I've decided that I'm going to keep my LJ stock except for minor appearance and convenience items (and a receiver hitch). But for mostly it's going to be going through it making sure everything is good to go while still using it around town.

For $250 bucks.. you can add a front lunchbox locker and really turn things up. Itll make running the lines a bit easier.

I think for most people, they like mods that you can "see" such as tires and lift. On my Jeep, my first mods are bumpers, warn winch, and locking differentials, all on stock tires and 0 lift.

@Ranger_b0b and @Equilibrium31 looked like they were doing just fine in their rigs. I know mine does pretty well.

Right? It's gotta be visibly modded to be cool. And we all want to be cool, no? On the other hand, TJ's are good at telling you what mods they actually need. Other than tires, most of those are hard to see. You can't see new springs or the correct gear ratio. And you only see driver skill when it counts.

If a bunch of old farts can take a collection of CJ2A's and MB's over the Rubicon, and if a group of 5 stock CJ's can drive from Terra del Fuego to the North Slope maybe a basically stock TJ can do more than we give it credit for.

Mine tells me it needs a tummy tuck EVERY time I take it out. The gas tank tuck I've already done helped immensely, but that stupid Rubicon shovel, I mean Skid, gets hung up EVERYWHERE. I seriously think that a Rubicon on real 31 x 10.5's (not the metric "31's" that come standard) with a tummy tuck would be MORE than up to 95% of all wheeling in the US.

Well here's my son's pretty much stock YJ and my stock TJ parked at a park.

Since we're aiming at stock Jeeps, just ignore the YJ with it's 2" lift, those wheels, some 16 gauge aluminum hiding more rust than what's visible and the hood scoop that I gorilla taped to the hood as a joke about 2 weeks before that picture.

Funny thing is that I ran that same trail before I modded my bumpers and added a winch and I actually had less trouble with my bottom scraping since I didn't have that extra weight. However, I felt a lot more confident crossing muddy terrain with the recovery option, haha.
