Bumper mounted tire carriers: are they all crap?

My TJs are bone stock.
Always topless and doorless.
Nothing is left inside but the floor mats.
Reason why I rarely swing the spare tire rear door.

I have a couple bags in my trunk. They hold jumper cables, tow ropes, shackles, tire tools, and wrenches for my control arms.

I hardly get in there.

By the way, Rock Hard 4x4 is 100% made in the USA :)

A pricey one but very well designed is the Metalcloak tire carrier. It's meant to carry 35"+ tires but I habe 33" tires and it works great. Had to flip the tire bracket upside down to accommodate the 33" tire but it still works great.

It fits the TJ really well IMHO. I just love how the corners match up to the tub.

On the hinge part it has bearings on top and bottom. It is also bolted from the top and bottom.

It also locks in place when fully opened.

If it wasn't so darn expensive MC would probably sell quite a few more. So far this thing is solid and I believe it will hold up just fine. I have no issues opening and closing. It's like buttah!

That’s one I actually like, but you’re right, the price is very steep!

It's high for a reason. Possibly the best on the market? If you look at pretty much all the other tire carriers the hinge system sits on top of the bumper. Over time the hinge obviously wears out and sags. Just too much weight for those types of designs. Metalcloaks design places the hinge on the outside of the bumper and eliminates the sag overtime. (At least I hope) haha! Regardless, I'm happy I have one and will love to see how well it holds up.

Yep, I agree that it’s a nice bumper. I just couldn’t justify that price just to support a 32” tire. Which is why I’ll probably go with an Exogate.

Bummer! It’s the ugly version meant for Jerry cans that sticks out way too far. Oh well, thanks for looking out at least!
