Changing from 2WD to 4H

We have a Wal-Mart that had a giant Boulder crash through the roof many moons ago…

They immediately closed the store and built the first Super Duper Wal-Mart not too far down the road. The old Wal-Mart happened to be next to the McD’s I worked at in HS. It was a giant, smooth parking lot and they still turned the street lights on for many years - it was a great place to practice snow drifting/sliding in winter months (also a great place to teach girlfriends how to drive stick shifts :) )

Switchbacking down into the valley. I can neither confirm or deny that I let the back kick out and slide around the corner sometimes if there’s no oncoming traffic.

Well you live in Florida so it doesn't really reflect badly on you. You have to have snowfall in the first place to get experience and skills driving in it.

I agree with everything you said except for the snow tires part. I'm not trying to argue that they aren't extremely helpful or that 4wd is going to help you turn or stop (obviously it wont). The only reason why I say that is because most people who I know who get snow tires in the first place are really bad at driving and aren't pushing their abilities to make use of them.

The amount of people I've tried to help out of a jam simply because the tires on the vehicle were shit is astounding. That's what that comment was intended for. But you're not wrong. A decent AT will suffice most of the time. The amount of people that think they can get away with tires that wouldn't even pass inspection is ridiculous.

I spend more time and energy clearing the snow berm on the last few feet of my driveway than I do the rest of my property. Those guys just don't give a F__k.

Where would you like them to put the snow? Plowing looks nice and easy but it's challenging to move snow while not being able to see all your obstacles and not destroy anything while you move 1000's of LBS with a steel blade and brute force. Gentle, is an art form. You also have to put 15ft snowbanks somewhere and NOBODY likes where you put them.

I'm going to share with you one of many plow guy stories and why plow guys "just don't give a fuck" as you put it. It's a rant so skip it if you don't want 10mins of reading...

My parents and my aunt and uncle used to own a duplex together. I would plow the driveway for free because who charges their parents and aunt and uncle? My uncle is the type of guy that is super nice but dumb as shit. Every time I'd call ahead and tell them "I'll be over in 30/45mins" My uncle would wait until I showed up, put all of his snow gear on, come wallowing out the house, and clear off EVERY SINGLE SNOWFLAKE on the car before he would get it out of my way to plow. I spoke to him about it civilly but he still didn't change. It's not like I could refuse to plow my parents driveway. I mean I could, but it's my parents. So one day, same routine and I flip my lid on the guy. Cuss him out, tell him to give me the keys, and go back in the fucking house. That seem to solve the problem. Next he decides that it's a good idea to start playing traffic cop as I plow. They live down a back country road that sees 4 cars an hour. So now rather than just looking for traffic, I have to deal with this dumbass in the road who just happens to be standing in the way EVERY TIME I need to back out. I flip out again and tell him to go back in the fucking house.

Then one day he asks me not plow snow in front of the house because it took too long to thaw in the spring and he wanted the lawn to grow faster. I asked him to come outside with me and show me where to put the snow. He points to a spot. I asked him if he's willing to repair the neighbors fence in the spring when the weight of that winter's snowbank destroyed it. He then pointed down a hill on the side of the house. I asked him who was going to sand/salt the hill so I wouldn't get stuck when the hill inevitably turns to ice. He then asked me to push it across the street. I asked him if thought the neighbor would agree to putting snow on their lawn because he didn't want to put snow on his lawn. He then wanted me to push all the snow to the end of the driveway, then push it down the side of the road, and then into the woods. I asked him if he thought I had a spare 3 hours to plow his driveway FOR FREE. We compromised and I put the snow where I wanted to.

The above story is one example of EVERY person you plow for. I'll never plow someone else's driveway again. I actually enjoy plowing snow but the people you have to deal with are simply clueless.

I want my ten minutes back. Can you put it over there?

I spent 8 weekends having about that same conversation with an owner.
I want those high line fenders with flare.
Okay, I don't mind limiting your uptravel if you don't, or we can make it a fair bit taller.
No, I don't want it taller and I want uptravel.
Alright, if you want uptravel and normal ride height, then you have to pick a different front fender.
I want those fenders.
Okay, then you get less uptravel or more height.
I don't want less uptravel and more height.
Pick a different fender.
I want those fenders.
Alrighty, more height or less uptravel, or smaller tires.
NO, I want those tires and those fenders.
I'm getting tired of repeating this. Pick, I'll work with it.
I want standard ride height, that tire and those fenders with full uptravel.
Not gonna happen.

Then he would show up the next weeked and we would do it all over again.

I should have told him a snow plow story.

Been there done that. I have had to drive cars before with worn out tires in the snow that were rwd, fwd, awd, 4wd. It's a shitshow every time.
