I really need to make me one of those! Been thinking about it for years. Was going to try and do it before Moab, but was working on the car trailer. You're getting me motivated on the tail gate table. I really like the aluminum with holes idea.

Now time for the side brackets, they will serve as the hinges and that’s what I’ll attach the cables or whatever I decide to use to support the table. I plan on using channel for this, mostly because I have some about the right size. I’ll be using Riv-nuts to attach everything and some custom stainless steel fasteners that I have from work. I marked out the radius corners on the table and the channels. I drilled and countersunk the holes on the panel where the hinge will pivot. I made some stainless bushings to go in the holes to “wear better” than just soft aluminum. I installed rivnuts for the hinge screws. Once I got the brackets attached to the table, I placed it on the tailgate to mark out for the brackets. I then drilled and rivnutted the tailgate. Next week I will finish it with some fresh paint and something to support the brackets. Now there’s only an inch left to deal with.

That would be great! I would probably just go straight up on the inside of the tailgate latch instead of going around it like you did (fine cutom work). How are you going to latch it closed?

I was going to pin it from the side but the sides are tight to the channels and they are very snug so I might not do anything at all.

I did this a while ago but though I would add it to my thread.
Here’s a cheap mod for the third brake light or CHMSL if you prefer, on my carrier all of the lug holes are open to do this, but usually there are at least 2 available. I used a single pin connector on each wire but any small 2 pin that will fit through the lug hole will work. The grommet will hold it in the lug hole.

Nooo you not slow.
...but the golden gate bridge took 4 years to build , although they cheated as they had a couple more men on the job haha

Finished the R&D on the tailgate table. Used 1/16” stainless wire rope to support the table on both sides and a quick release pin to hold the table closed against the tailgate.
