Exogate / MORryde propane tank mount

Recently I designed and built a propane stove option for the Trail Kitchen. This is a photo of the kitchen with the new stove, the photo shows the kitchen in the JKU because I haven't had the kitchen in the LJ since I built the stove.

I tested the stove with 1-lb. disposable propane cans and with the 20-lb. propane tank from my backyard gas grille and it worked very well with both. A 20-lb. propane tank is way too big and heavy and the 1-lb. disposable cans may be a bit small so a 5-lb. propane tank would probably be the best fuel source on a camping expedition.

The mounts for 5-lb. propane tanks that are on the market are pretty expensive and there isn't one that will bolt to the Exogate without additional brackets, but an Exogate-specific mount can be made for a very reasonable cost of materials so I designed and built one. This mount bolts to the Exogate hinges with no drilling, and it's easily removable for when the Jeep is being used for daily driving. Haven't painted it yet, but here it is installed on the LJ:

When this is bolted to the hinges it gets in the way of my CB antenna mount so I added holes in two locations in the tray for an antenna.

And for times when I might want to carry a propane tank but have something else mounted to the tailgate hinges, the design includes the capability of bolting it to a roof rack. The rack isn't on the Jeep at the moment (I store the rack hanging from the garage door rails above the Jeep so it may look like the rack is on the Jeep in this photo), but here's the mount and tank installed on the roof rack:

I made up a special ratchet strap to secure the tank:

Seems to work pretty well.

Thank you. I've done detailed threads on the design and construction of the custom modular hardtop and the custom CJ-grille kit (all homemade), but they're on another forum - I'm not sure if the rules of this forum permit posting links to other forums so I'll have to find out if that's allowed.

Thank you. My Jeeps are set up for off road exploration, not "how big a rock can I crawl over". The full overland setup includes a roof-top tent and the kitchen; the kitchen is available from MORryde, although not with all of the features that mine has (yet).

But it does get used for more than exploration, this was the day after the expo and I'm strapping a CJ up over a ledge...

After making a tray to hold a propane tank for stoves, I finalized the design of the mounting brackets. I had been using off-the-shelf (pun intended) shelf brackets but decided that if these would ever end up being a production product a better set of brackets would be in order. Here's a final set.

The brackets fit on the Exogate/MORryde hinges on the TJ/LJ and the JK/JKU and so far I've mounted a propane tank tray and a jerry can/ammo can tray to them and tested the fit on both Jeeps.

Haven't decided if I'll paint or powder coat these prototypes, but other than that this project is done.

I've sent photos and details of the Exogate/MORryde tailgate prop, jerry can carrier and propane tank carrier to MORryde; whether or not they they decide these are products they'd like to bring to market is up to them.

BTW the reason I designed the jerry can carrier and propane tank carrier so that the same parts bolt to both the TJ/LJ and the JK/JKU is that like many other companies, MORryde has been less interested in TJ/LJ projects in the last few years due to diminishing market demand for products for those models. In my last email to MORryde I explained how the engineering work necessary to produce the jerry can and propane tank carriers would be great for the JK overlanding market and as a bonus they'd be able to offer the same product to the TJ/LJ market with no changes or additional effort. I'm trying to support the diminishing TJ market with new designs but ultimately it's not up to me if a product comes to market or not, I'm just a guy who designs and builds things in his home workshop and I don't decide if something comes to market.
