How does this gear pattern look?

ok as mentioned in my build thread ( that not very everyone reads so hopefully this will have a larger response).

the pinion pre-load is 30 inch lb's, spec is 22-35.
the backlash is .008. spec is .006-010.

it looks pretty close to me. i must admit it could be just a hair more center tooth, but i don't think have the shims to move that little. last 2 shims available are .105 & .150

b4 i move anything what yall think?

so the more i look at it, the hit is just a tad high on the tooth. for this i believe i should increase the pinion shim some.

A little deeper would be getting picky, otherwise I would run that no problem

Looks pretty good to me. You could try adding more pressure to the ring gear and thin the paint a tad to get a clearer drive side reading.

i've used the Billavista gear bible to help. and i went back and read it 4x and i did apply pressure to the gear when spun but they suggest 50# of resistance............i don't think i produced that, so i'll clean it all up and repaint it and try to get significant pressure b4 i run another test.

but i do have more space below the patch than above, so i'm kinda leaning toward just a bit deeper on the tooth .
i'll apply more pressure see what that yields and go from there.

alright, i wiped all that thick grease away. mixed a batch with a few drops of gear oil and jammed a couple wooden handles into the casing to force some load, this time i needed a ratchet to turn the pinion.

almost the same result.
i tried to get a side view, it's really hard to determine depth from pics.
in the last pic you can see how deep into the tooth i am. it's really only about 1/2 way to the root, and this leaves just a very narrow edge at the top. it's operating on the top 50% of the tooth, i think i'd want to be deeper, no?

if this was my sedan i'd be fine with it. but this is a rig i intend to push up against stuff and force it over.
thinking i want to be hitting a little closer to root and have it push off b4 coming close to having pressure on the tooth top

I now have a bit of a howl from 50-60mph. I think yours is just about right.

yours looks more like what i'm thinking, if i had that nice cushion at the top like yours. it has released b4 coming close to the top edge. i like that better than mine.
this is my 1st and i really want it as perfect as i can get it.

This pattern is classic pinion too deep: you have a half moon and it's flat and straight across the bottom of the tooth.

Which is why I was warning him not to go too deep. Also explains why I have a bit of noise. Gonna have to address it at some point. I may toss the Traclok for a Truetrac.

Enough that I can hear it over all the other normal noises a TJ with a hard top makes. I can modulate the howl on load or coast, but it's most noisy under constant load, such as maintaining 55mph.

Did you try to tighten up BL and see where that puts your pattern? I'd do that first before I'd drop the pinion closer.
