How to remove these hard upper buttons

Scored a really nice set of hard uppers (gaskets are practically new) and plan on taking them fully apart for cleaning and painting to match dark tan hardtop. These "buttons" feel like they should come off, but also feel like if I pop them off they're broken. Anyone know how to do it correctly?

Those look like Christmas tree retainers. Tear them out and put new ones in.

flat head screwdriver, putty knife, trim removal tool, etc.

If the doors have been anywhere with real heat (as we have inArizona) the retaining ribs will strip off when the fastener is pulled out. I had some survive for many years in Texas and failed after one summer in Phoenix.
