I learned something about the Mopar Instatrunk today

When I got the instatrunk, I noticed it had a little cutout for what looked like an Allen key, but that made no sense to me since it’s held in with thumb screws.

Whilst rummaging through my glovebox last night, I found the OEM Allen key supplied for removing the hard top bolts and the windshield/spreader bar bolts. Then it suddenly clicked what the little cutout on the instatrunk was for.

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought that was a cool little gimmick since there’s no other place to “securely” keep the Allen key. I’m not sure if the Bestop version offers the same feature.

Before I bought a real Jeep, I had a 2012 JKU. It had a small insta trunk type area that also had holes for the hard top bolts.

I bought one in the spring, found one brand new still in the Mopar box so it came with instructions. The thumb screws and OEM wheel lock/key also have storage places.

Thanks for sharing! I didn’t know it could hold the thumb screws and wheel key and lock, I’m gonna have to go check that out now.

Yea that’s it. Discontinued. Next best thing is a torx socket with regular wrench.​

If anyone finds a source for these I'd like one. I know there are better options but I have an Instatrunk and love all the one stuff. I'm kind of a dork like that. Let me know.

How sturdy is the Mopar InstaTrunk? I have the Bestop version. It's not as robust as the Bestop version I had in my JK but better than nothing.
I camp out of my TJ often and being able to flip the top back would be advantageous. Looks like the top is secured closed by plastic slide pins. How easy do you think it would be to defeat them?
