Installing LSD without having to re-setup gears

Oh yeah. That is how I did my own since I didn't have a puller at the time. That is one good thing about shims outside the bearing, no pressing and pulling to set backlash.

Good to have that confirmed, thank you both. I never thought of doing that for the carrier bearings until today and spun my wheels a lot searching for pullers before lol.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I didn't want to clutter the forum with an identical one. @Thumper4fun did you have any success in doing this? I see your profile has 4.10 gears and a TT in the rear! Did you do the work yourself or just took it in to a shop? I'm looking at doing the same with 4.56 that I had installed two years ago.

My plan was to follow the directions Jerry provided and install my LSD and new axles. However, I had to have wrist surgery which derailed my plans so I paid the local Jeep guy do it for me. Jerry and Rob make it sound relatively doable if you have the tools, time and 2 good hands.

Oh dang! Very sorry to hear that. Wish you a speedy recovery. At least you got them in there. I paid to have my axles regeared and the shop tried to overcharge me and both Dana 30 axle seals were leaking up front😡. From that day forward I decided I would do all my work, except any limitations that would far exceed my capabilities. But you guys are right, this job looks really doable

So, looking through this thread again & thinking about using some of the $ Uncle Sam gave BACK to me to order the carrier, install kit and locker for my rear 44 (probably east coast gear for carrier & kit & lockright locker).
Why would I need a bearing puller? Is there a pic or vid reference for doing what I want to do you guys would recommend? I'm a carpenter & have owned a TJ since 1998, so mechanically I've been there. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around all these terms without seeing it. Thanks

You need a bearing puller, to pull bearings of course 😁
Carrier bearings are a press fit with shims under them to set backlash. There are various side bearing pullers. I have a Yukon, there are similar ones available. You'll also need a magnetic dial indicator, dial calipers, and torque wrench.

Dana 44 is shimmed between the bearing race and housing so you really don’t need a bearing puller, just get new bearings.

While you could cut the carrier bearings off it's not easy and professionals would not do it that way. When I removed my carrier bearings it even made the impact wrench work hard and it took some time to finally get each one off.

I’m going to try to use a bearing puller first but may end up using a saw to hack them off. Anyone got experience making their own setup bearings?

unless your changing your R&P you don’t need set up bearings for a Dana 44.

if you are changing the gears, you need to make an inner pinion bearing set up bearing(big one).

I’m changing out the whole carrier for a Truetrac. Wouldn’t a setup bearing set be easier to mount and dismount shims in case I do need to actually adjust the backlash?

So, with my 44, I can install the bearings and shim after? I haven't cracked it open yet to check, but that's what I'm hoping. I'll be getting all new bearings and shims with a master install kit. I'm thinking it shouldn't be rocket surgery, but...

on a dana 44 the shims go on the outside of the bearing so a setup bearing is not required. its only when the shims go under the bearing that setup bearings are required. Jerry posted a picture of this above.

Unless you have master shims, it is easiest to try and install the carrier and both shim stacks all at the same time. This is easiest with the axle removed so you can set the carrier straight down into the housing with the shim stacks.

Ok, that makes sense now. I haven’t cracked mine open yet but I’d that’s the case it’ll make this job a little earlier
