Well dang, why have I been under the delusion I needed a carrier bearing remover all these years then?![]()
I've also used to cheap wedge style puller from the auto parts store. But the bearing race wouldn't budge until I hit them with MAPP gas.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I didn't want to clutter the forum with an identical one. @Thumper4fun did you have any success in doing this? I see your profile has 4.10 gears and a TT in the rear! Did you do the work yourself or just took it in to a shop? I'm looking at doing the same with 4.56 that I had installed two years ago.

You need a bearing puller, to pull bearings of courseSo, looking through this thread again & thinking about using some of the $ Uncle Sam gave BACK to me to order the carrier, install kit and locker for my rear 44 (probably east coast gear for carrier & kit & lockright locker).
Why would I need a bearing puller? Is there a pic or vid reference for doing what I want to do you guys would recommend? I'm a carpenter & have owned a TJ since 1998, so mechanically I've been there. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around all these terms without seeing it. Thanks
My Dana 44 shims are outside of the bearings. You need a bearing puller, to pull bearings of course
Carrier bearings are a press fit with shims under them to set backlash.
I’m going to try to use a bearing puller first but may end up using a saw to hack them off. Anyone got experience making their own setup bearings?
I’m changing out the whole carrier for a Truetrac. Wouldn’t a setup bearing set be easier to mount and dismount shims in case I do need to actually adjust the backlash?unless your changing your R&P you don’t need set up bearings for a Dana 44.
if you are changing the gears, you need to make an inner pinion bearing set up bearing(big one).
Ok, that makes sense now. I haven’t cracked mine open yet but I’d that’s the case it’ll make this job a little earlieron a dana 44 the shims go on the outside of the bearing so a setup bearing is not required. its only when the shims go under the bearing that setup bearings are required. Jerry posted a picture of this above.
Unless you have master shims, it is easiest to try and install the carrier and both shim stacks all at the same time. This is easiest with the axle removed so you can set the carrier straight down into the housing with the shim stacks.
I knew the Rubicon was that way, wasn't sure on the non Rubi 44. The older 44's shimmed under the bearing.
You aren't going to hacksaw the inner race. It is hardened. You'll need a cut off wheel.I’m going to try to use a bearing puller first but may end up using a saw to hack them off. Anyone got experience making their own setup bearings?
Yeah, that’s what I meant. You aren't going to hacksaw the inner race. It is hardened. You'll need a cut off wheel.
Is that a rubi 44? I know mine's not
