Colorado Krew Hangout

Update on the Buena Vista area snow. We went out Sunday and did some playing. Grizzly Lake is open all the way with an avalanche that you can get around. Hancock lake and pass are still snowed in at about 11,700ft. Tincup will probably not open for about 3 to 4 weeks.

Thanks for posting the update. I hope to get back up to Hancock Lake this summer.

😅 I can see the confusion. It would be a pretty random act by someone.

We are working with a mine who diverted a creek on their property without the proper permits. The feds found out and are making the mine perform corrective mitigation activities with their now after-the-fact permit. One of the special conditions to their permit is that they need to plant native and woody vegetation along the creek corridor. By the time our construction ended last year, it was way too late in the season to do anything. So just a few weeks ago we harvested a bunch of willows near the site and are now ready to plant them. We just need flows to come down so we can get equipment near the creek and so the freshly planted willows don't wash away after planting.

That's rad. Yeah the flows down there are just insane this year. I'm really hoping this doesn't turn into another 2013 flood season.

I’m looking for info on Schofield Pass outside Crested Butte; I’m putting together a family jeep trip for July and would like to know if Schofield would be appropriate for my plans.

I’ll be in my LJ, with the family in convoy; I’ve rented two JLUR which should be on 33’s.

No one will have a winch, so my main concern is how likely it is to need one. I know the trail can change from year to year and it isn’t open yet, but I thought I’d throw out the question now.

I first ran Schofield about 9 years ago when my TJ was effectively stock with worn out 32" BFG all terrains and over a dozen times since. I didn't use lockers or a winch. The trail isn't much different as of summer 2021, when I was there last.

Be aware that July is early for Schofield. There is a massive snow bridge over the river that I don't recall having seen clear until early/mid July. It is not something you want to bash through.

This was early July a few years ago.

We’d be there July 19 or 20, so hopefully it’d be passable by then.

TrailsOffRoad made it sound feasible, but some of the users posted that they had to winch around the main obstacle. Probably just LWB vehicles.

Is it better to drive it one direction vs the other?

I'm not sure what the main obstacle would be or what there is to winch around. It's a fairly consistent narrow rocky road from start to finish.

By happenstance, I usually start from Marble. But it doesn't really matter. Passing on the narrow road while next to the river is unpleasant from either direction. Keep an eye out for the few wide spots and be ready to back up into them without going off the edge.

Finally some good jeeping weather this week. The sun felt amazing yesterday. I'm a little worried about run off though. I keep forgetting that it's barely started this season. Trying to find some little pockets to fish on Clear Creek is getting quite difficult.

Anyone have a portable welder that could zap some shock mounts into place?

i’ve decided to cut them off and reattach. with the tummy tuck and lift they are pointing straight at the ground and look like a hang-up hazard.

i’ll post a pic when i get back in the garage. been enjoying coffee in this cool breeze

I’ve been over Schofield pass a few times. I can’t recall any need for a winch. If the drivers are not confident it’s a narrow road. So I’d suggest they have some experience. I was just at the Crystal mill last night actually. Talking with a local hunting guide in the area while eating at Slow Grooving bbq in Marble he said the pass is deep this year so not sure when it will be passable. The river was the highest he had ever recalled yesterday and the data backed it up when we looked at the flow rates. Anyway hope it works out for you guys. I got funny looks by all the out of state guy’s driving big Jk, Jl and Jt’s. But from Marble to the mill a grocery getter works just fine.

Just ran Pisgah up to the big intersection past the shooting range on Yankee Hill. It's gotten way harder this season. Definitely a few mudholes and creeks, but nothing that you're likely to get stuck in. I'll run the whole trail Sunday and see what the rest looks like.

I'll have two pretty inexperienced drivers in the rental Jeeps, and at least a few of the passengers might find a narrow off-camber shelf road a bit too much. We'll probably stay on the Crested Butte side and explore the side trails. We'll save the Punchbowl for another season.

Thanks for all the info!

I ran Pisgah / Yankee Hill end-to-end a few days ago (Central City to Alice). It was a little wet in places, rocky bottom puddles, not much mud. I thought it was a little easier than last time I was on it a couple years ago. But both my Jeep and its driver are a little more capable now. ;)

Maybe I'm forgetting the trail from last season. I always think Yankee Hill looks harder than the last time I did it and I haven't ran it since early July. Also my first time wheeling since October. And pretty brain dead after a very chaotic past few days at work. The v notch on Pisgah seemed bigger and so did some of the rocks. I also forgot that I have a very Coloradoan definition of "mud". Dirty water=mud.

At the rock gardens, kind of near the central section of the trail, maybe? Trail separates into two for a short way. If that's it, the south side is pretty rough, I took the somewhat easier north side.

That would make sense, I usually go the south side. I'll have the buddy I'm going with Sunday take some pics. Didn't take any today because I was too preoccupied with driving.
