Less telemarketers and robocalls

I have gotten a few texts recently.

There was a stretch where I was involved in a group text, they all had the same area code and first three digits of my cell number. I think there were 12 people in this group. Conversations about homework, which jerseys are we wearing? I thought it was a scam but they were dropping names of teachers that I had in high school.

While these calls are annoying, the really sad part of this kind of crap is that the scammers making so many of these calls often target our older population, who are particularly vulnerable to these kinda scams. There's been a series on this recently that I've been following that's talked about what has made older people most vulnerable to scams. Very sad stuff.

It's a good thing you didn't fall for it and wear your old jersey to work the next day. :)

I do that to the "Your social has been suspended until you call us to clear up some problems". I click through and ask them what my social security number is. Huh? Well, you called me, what is my number? It is suspended. You do know that the SSA does not conduct any business whatsoever over the phone and never calls anyone, right? click.

Doesn't seem to affect the frequency much.
The wife got the " your ss# has been suspended..." 🤣

. . . You do know that the SSA does not conduct any business whatsoever over the phone and never calls anyone, right?

I used to think that, so when I received a phone call from what appeared to be a local number from a guy claiming to be employed in the local SSA office asking if I had recently applied for benefits. I was sure it was a scam and hung up. The guy kept calling back swearing he was a government employee and I kept hanging up.

Eventually, curiosity got the better of me so I stopped by the local SSA office and inquired. As it turns out the guy was legit and was investigating potential fraudulent applications for benefits. He had been trying to confirm whether or not I had filed anything. (Apparently someone had used my social security number or my name to apply for disability benefits someplace on the other side of the country.)

I recall mentioning my understanding that the SSA never initiates communication by phone or email and the guy responding that is indeed the SSA policy, but he had only been trying to schedule an appointment and I would hang up just as soon as he said the words 'Social Security Administration.'

I asked if that happened often. "All the time," he lamented.

Duh.

The ones we get are from the IRS about the suspended social, not the SSA.

I once received a recorded message with a female voice claiming to be from Social Security telling me that there was a warrant out for my arrest and I needed to immediately call the number provided and pay the fine.

I called back, gave my name and my address, 1060 W. Addison, Chicago, and told the guy that I couldn't go to the bank or Western Union because I was disabled but I had the cash for the fine if they would send someone over to pick it up right away.

Never heard back.

I sometimes wonder if he ever figured out that 1060 W. Addison is Wrigley Field.

It should be a rule if you can catch one of those assholes in person, you're allowed by law to drag them behind your car to the nearest police station and turn them in for a bounty.

My dad got a call from someone claiming to be his grandson. Said he was in some kind of trouble and needed cash.. My dad (mid 80's at the time) asked which grandson, the caller said something about being the favorite, and dad said "well if your really are my favorite grandkid then you know I'm broke, call your dad."

I kept getting one from the IRS stating I owed Taxes and that there was a warrant for my arrest. But it was hysterical because the guy had a strong Indian accent, (Dot ... not feather)

My wife received one where they said she would be arrested if she didn't return their call 🤣

Truly, telemarketers are the lowest form of douchebag there is. If I met someone that told me they were in the business, I may kung fu chop em in the throat 😆

whats worse was, I just retired from Verizon, and I was constantly getting calls from all over the country. I found that you pick up the phone and don't say a word. a lot of the robocalls would not kick in till they got a response if it was an actual person they would either say .. uhm, Hello? or they would immediately hang up and call back.

I answered an English robocall in Spanish once. About 5 minutes later, I got a Spanish speaking robocall. I need to work on my Thai or some other obscure language to see if I get a call in that language.
