Lifting eyebolts on hardtop?

I finally got a hardtop for my Jeep and I was wondering if I could put 4 lifting eyebolts (stylishly fabricated) through the top and avoid the whole strap through the inside setup. I was thinking of putting metal bars on the inside to anchor and distribute the weight. I would then use a portable harness to lift it from the body whether at home, my hunting property, or even a stout tree limb. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Just scheming my next mod.

There's no reason you couldn't. I mean let's put it this way... If guys are drilling holes to install XJ roof racks on their hard top, then it stands to reason eye-bolts would work just fine!

I was wondering whether or not the top would warp under its weight when removed but the bars inside should keep it evenly distributed.

This would actually be a great idea... much more simple than my hoist.

Good idea and would look good if done right. Id be sure to properly brace it to evenly distrulibute the weight. Also, make sure you put the eyes in the right spots to keep it level when hanging. Lastly, make sure to use silicone, etc to keep it watertight. Post up pix along the way and when done.

The marine world offers up all sorts of stainless pad eyes and eyebolts that could work, as long as the underside is supported to spread the stress. A good urethane sealant such as Sikaflex or 3M 5200 would guarantee a leak-proof seal.

I bolted a roof rack to it. I even used expanding rubber inserts in the bolt holes trying to keep things waterproof.

I lift mine using the roof racks.... those use 8 bolts plus a load distribution wedge. not so sure about 4 eye bolts tho. Heres the Yakima system...

Yeah that stuff is great! I use it on the boat and have no issues whatsoever.
