I’ve brought 4.56 gears with a thick cut rear for my Dana 44 in my TJ, the dif shop I’m getting them installed at has told me that I need a new carrier to install the numerically higher gear but I was under the impression thick cut gears could be installed in the standard lsd carrier, is this true?

If so main question I’m after what E-locker can I buy that will support thick cut 4.56 gears for my Dana 44 or will I need to buy another set of standard 4.56 gears for my 44?
Thanks

What is the carrier break on the existing carrier?

Hard to answer your question knowing nothing about your rig, but since you have the dana 44 are you running a Rubicon? If so, I believe it would have come from the factory with 4.10's and an e-locker, and would be the reason you don't need thick cut gears. I believe the carrier break is 3.73, but not sure.

Someone check me on this.

Edit: Disregard. Just saw your last post.

The break on the Dana 44 is 3.73 & up. Everything I've read (and plan to do in the near future) is around the numerically smaller carrier working well with thick cut 4.56 gears. But maybe there are use cases where thick cut don't work even on the "smaller" carrier?

It is likely the shop just doesn't know about the availability of thick cut gears.

I'm no diff guy, but:
As far as I can tell, the Eaton E-locker is a carrier (will replace yours). It's available in two versions for the Dana 44, 30-spline: 19977-010 for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios, and 19969-010 for 3.92 and numerically higher ratios. So you can get one for thick or thin ring gears.

Hysterical.

Or maybe I was asking if the thicker gears required more thread engagement.
They may provide deeper threaded holes and longer bolts but they are not required. If the bolts for a normal pattern ring gear hold well enough to do the job, they will also work on a thicker gear. The thickness of the gear doesn't change the loads they see.
